Backlinks can be generated by participating in forums such as this, writing great content and by forming networks with others in your niche.

Don't look at Twitter as a way to "promote" stuff. Look at it as a way to reach out to readers, engage them and to build relationships. Limit your promotion there.

It's also a great way to see what's trending and what may be a "hot" topic.

Very nice list for getting traffic and also generating backlinks. I also add guest blog posting with this list. This is a good way of getting strong backlinks and also direct traffic.

In getting backlinks, you can use methods as stated above. It's better to use those methods because having links from different sources is very good.

Twitter is good in promoting some stuff if it is interesting enough for twitter users.

Directory backlink is great for SEO, but i found almost all directory did not accept submission.
