the entire extent of niche research is very limited to product research for physical products i learned through a WSO.

i want to start up a blog on the outdoors; camping, survival tips, destinations off the beaten path, hiking, etc.

like everyone else I want to find a niche field that isn't too competitive but offers great traffic potential and I want to be able to monetize my blog down the line - which i don't see being a big issue.

can someone give me some tips on how to research this niche so I can determine if it's worth getting into?

    As a free method, usually, Google Keyword Tool (in AdWords) can bring "nice" keyword ideas even you start searching with physical product's keywords, with "closely related" option unchecked. It's like a chain reaction, you see a catchy keyword in the results and search it, then you see another nice one and search it... You can end up coming with a great list of niche ideas. Then it's up to your SERP competition checking method, it'll determine how fast you'll eliminate keywords with high competition.

    I hate doing niche and key word research. I did a list of key words for a site on the mortgage nich. I know that is competitive so I went down the list to the lowest hanging fruit. I ran them through Traffic Travis where they rank the competion 1-5 One is high competion and down the line to 5 which is low competion. All of my keywords were 5 or 5, so low competition I thought.

    I can't get it ranked and someone offered to look at it for me. They told me that my key words were high competion. WTF. Is TT no good? There were some other things I had messed up, so the keyword researchc wasn't the only reason. I have a big job to fix it, but I keep thinking that may e I should just dump it.

    It seems to be like this every attempt I make at building a blog. It gets very frustrating.

      Don't follow the star guide from Traffic Travis. Simply look at the top ten sites. Are the high pagerank? Are they old? Do they have a ton of links to the page ranking? Even more links to the entire domain? Is the keyword in the title tag, descriptions tag and h1 tag?

      If so, site will be hard to beat. Niche Keyword research is an acquired taste--which is why I'm always pushing for people to find alternative ways of getting targeted traffic.

        Whenever I looked to do research for physical products, I just went to the top dogs in that arena...and dug into the research that they ALREADY DID!

        After checking out the first few pages of "Big G" (I can't use links, yet) for said physical product and the top sites, I found that was MORE than enough info for me to chew on for some time.

        Interestingly, I found sources for said physical products OUTSIDE of those top sites more than once!

    In my experience 'keyword research' is a key element to succeeding online. While I use Google Keyword Tool and Traffic Travis, I am planning to buy Market Samurai as well in the near future.

    I think it's critical to have the right tools for the job. As was so in my prior offline business experiences. However, it's much, much cheaper online.

    As BloggingPro stated above learning to "target" specific competitors and their SEO practices has opened my eyes to how easy it is to take down a top 3 slot on all major search engines.

    It's critical to apply your "Targeted Keywords" into your posts, pages, and sites properly, as the search engines will reward you handsomely.

    There are some great WSO's out there, and one that helped me a great deal was Matthew Neer's "Digital Bankroll"...it's like $9 per month, but a great bargain considering the step-by-step videos he's putting out.

    While I am still learning the fundamentals, article spinning and mass registry submissions was a grey area that Matt's WSO has shed some light on, and I am in the 'thick' of applying to gain some massive back-links, exposure, and targeted traffic.

    If the outcome of applying these methods are as good as they are perceived to be, the competition doesn't stand a chance!

    I was taught how to do effective Niche research by Steve Wagenheim, no less, a master of niches. Since then I've wanted to semi-automate the process so I'm using Market Samurai.

    But, beware, the 'standard' methods don't always yield the keywords that will work for you. Steve taught me the sort of ways to look at Google results to filter out the niche keywords that are likely to bring results. There are many ways of interpreting the stats and relying on the 'standard' filters just gets you to the keywords that everyone else is probably using!

    The truth is that there is no simple answer - no right or wrong way. You need to use your common sense and look at what is likely to work to bring your site traffic based on the section of the niche you are targeting.

    For example many people jump on a keyword because it has low competition in Google. But that doesn't mean that keyword will make money. Look at the paid ads. If there are less than five paid ads it probably means that the keyword isn't profitable. Don't expect to be the first to discover a niche all to yourself! Always check that low competition keywords are going to bring buyers to your door instead of time wasters.

    It looks like your blog is going to have broad appeal, which is a problem in itself. You should make sure you are creating categories that have sought-after keywords and pepper your posts with those keywords. Target your posts or pages to specific products and you should have some success.

      i think i'm following you. in the last paragraph, do you mean having multiple categories (survival, tents, tools) on my site and try to rank those for those keywords to cover all spectrums of traffic?

    It's always a good sign if you type any of your keywords in Google and the paid ads appear at the top and the side. Generally means money is being spent by advertisers, so there is money to be made, not just from Adsense of course but in general.

    Perhaps the people who come to the site by keyword we set may not be our customers.
    That will make us pay for bandwidth, with no benefits.

    We should choose the product that we have as a keyword.

    I am a beginner in this, but this is how I do it now. I look at Google Keyword for a micro-niche and then I see how much competition I have. Then, I write an article and include keywords in it. And then, I guess that article will pull traffic. I didn't get to that point yet.

    One approach I have been getting good results with is by using Google Trends to look for areas that have been on a steady or northeast trend for the last 90 days. More stable results would be over last year. Then I take the information and run it through Scrapebox to get some large lists of keywords. Lastly, I run everything through Market Samurai to sift through it and help me determine which areas have commerciality.

    If you don't have Market Samurai, you can use the Google Keywords tool for free that will help with some of the process.

    As you are probably aware already, you could ask three people and get 10 opinions. While there are some more tried and tested methods, adapting your own from the methodologies of others has worked for me and it does result in profitable results in most cases.

    Yes, like it has been mentioned above, I really think you should narrow down your niche. I mean you named 3 different things you want write about in your blog. Narrow down your choice to one and establish as an authority in that niche. Gain a following and sell them then.

    As far as doing research, check out forums that suit your broader topic and then see what people are having problems with. That might just help you on its own in narrowing down your niche idea.
