I have a large site that has taken a big hammering following Panda.

My theory on how it works is as follows.

Each page is given a score maybe zero to start with

Positive factors
* backlinks
* Social factors / facebook / Google +1
* Uniqueness

Negative factors
* Duplicate content
* Spelling
* Known spinning patterns e.g phrases like "Lookup Motor Optimization"

If your site has high traffic and too high a ratio of negative to positive pages scores you get the Panda hit.

Does anyone agree with this model - or is it more about duplicate content and grammar patterns?

I have ignored page speed and ad/content ratios because when i have done testing pre-post panda removing all ads / increasing page speed has led to No improvements.

    I had considered that.

    Some of the content on the site is really good - unique well written etc
    Other stuff is spun / poor quality.

    But the bounce rate is not much different.

    Some of the best remaining content has a higher bounce rate than the worse etc.

    Any ideas what % bounce rate leads to a recovery. My average is around 85%

    I've also tried adding images and the odd youtube video to a sample of pages good and bad. It doesn't seem to make a lot of difference either. I thought that would improve the bounce rate, but no.

    In terms of backlinks maybe (just a guess) linking to a low quality website or creating duplicate content to gain backlinks via article submissions.

      I only use no-follow for user generated content pages - but I agree that duplicate or nearly duplicate content is part of it.

      Has anyone tried adding links to authority websites e.g a link to bmw from a page about bmw parts? I had thought of building a database of good sites and using the page tags to select appropriate ones? It seems a bit of a crude approach
