I think directory submission is actually pretty underrated. It won't provide traffic, but neither does spinning an article and submitting that. But, it does provide a bunch of links to your homepage if you do it right, occasionally with anchor text, and since you can do the whole thing in a half hour with software, why not go for it?

It's not dead. It's just not worth the time / money required to do it anymore. It's good after you've exhausted other backlinking methods, though.

It depends on the context. They might not be the greatest for an affiliate site but they are quite important for chasing local traffic and utilising Google Places. Check out some info on Google Places (and Bing's equivalent) and you will see the importance of 'citations' which are just directory listings confirming your site's location and niche.

No, it's not the dead, but you better submit your site to quality web dirs (like PR 3 and above), if you want to see some actual results.

No, directory submission is not dead. The directories are actually meant for getting the backlinks that sometimes help in getting the traffic to the site.

First, why you so lethargic in terms of writing... I mean obviously we can read the title, but its a courtesy that needs to be there... You are asking a question and that in such a arrogant style... Talking about the question, I dont think that directory submission is dead.. it is the only way which can provide you permanent links.. Yeah, there is a flood of low class directories, which will not serve you as helpful.. Use standard and known directories in this case

Just stay away from the auto-accept directories. Also, don't rely on them too much. It's a good addition to a link building strategy. But you shouldn't spend too much time with it.

Not dead. Essential for link diversity.

The fact that it does not generate traffic directly is not the point. If it helps you rank better you get more natural search traffic.

Just submitt to high quality directories in the relavent catagory

    Hi,

I think web directories are a good way to get backlinks. I haven't seen a noticable increase in traffic but it is a good long term (3-6 months) strategy to get links. You can get some good high profile links that way.

I had a website submitted to 200 web directories recently, all of which were free.

    Best wishes,

    Ruth

Directory submission is still important for giving quality backlinks. Try submitting to high PR sites. I also use G-Lock Fast Directory Submitter to automate the task.

Whether it's completely dead or not can be argued, I mean a link is a link, however these aren't far off being classified as link farms, that is links with no surrounding unique relevant content to the target site, and they have been significantly devalued by google because of the dramatic increased usage of automated software creating these crappy links.

Yes EDWINEDDY. So the final result is that Directory Submission can not ever be dead.
That is the reason we have a large number of Directory sites to be submitted on a daily basis.

actually, i do not very clear why you said directory submission dead. is this way can not bring you backlink? enough backlink? or you think it waste time?
i'm a newbie, but i still use directory submission, i mean mainly, for backlink getting. at least until now it's ok for me.
i want to say, if you want to get quality backlinks, you can submit to some high PR directories, those directories show a good reputation by Google. if you focus on quantity, you can use some tools to submit automatically.
this is my experience, hope it can give you some suggestions.

It's still not proven that directory submission is dead. But let's put it right here: not all things that will not cause bad effects are good.

It's always optional if you want to do directory submission or not.

Directory submission is dead if you're using software that mass submit.

Throw money into the mix and it's a different ball game. I've seen sites where you can buy home page links with real PR, some are even site wide for $5 "lifetime" link. TBH not sure why I didn't buy a link.
