Ok so I am new to SEO and have learned a ton already. I was under the impression that submiting to we directories and high PR sites with a link of my website would be a backlink. Well I have done this but when I use a free backlink checker via the web it shows I have 0 backlinks. How to I generate backlinks? What is the right and wrong way? Any help would be greatly apprecated

I am pretty sure your backlinks are already live but the backlink checking tools will take a longer time to "show" you the links. This is natural and nothing can be done about it.

The main idea is to keep on building links and not checking them using backlink checking tools since doing so would cause you to question your link building approach.

    Hope that helps.

Yes edu and gov backlinks are great, but use them sparingly.

Yeah all those webmaster tools will show you links but after a good delay so please do not worry about it.

The idea behind link building is that you do it consistently and not worry about where the links are showing or not

Hope this helps, If you have more questions, you can always shoot me a PM.

    Mike,
I have been having the same problem with a new site and asked a similar question. Essentially, I was told to be patient....it can take awhile for Google to index your pages and for backlinks to kick in. I was manually building backlinks day and night for 6 weeks and was so disappointed to see only about 25 backlinks coming up on most of the backlinks checkers. Hopefully things kick in soon. It is frustrating and it makes me think I must be missing something, even though I've bought numerous WSOs on SEO and am following them to the letter. I am sure some of the veterans here can offer more help....I am in the same boat as you!

Just forget the directories. They're a waste of energy. Everything else works better if you work honestly and don't try to scam and spam.

Try some bookmarking sites - links in forum signatures along with useful (Note: I said useful) posts - and some blog replies that actually show interest in what the author wrote. (again - useful replies). Sometimes there are other reasons for your links not counting but I can't remember why - I'll let someone who knows more about the technical end of the Net explain that one.

Do you write? Do you have a blog? Get ping-o-matic and ping that blog every time you put something on it. After you put up a real good post and ping it - go put that article on a few submission sites - do it in that order.

Wow - you people are fast. There were no replies when I started typing.

As far as will you have to build links for the rest of your site's life? Not necessarily. It depends on how well you network. I haven't bothered for probably over a year now - but members of my site put my banner on their sites and if I submit an article to a submission site, they usually get picked up by dozens or more site owners for their own sites. So if you build your business with earnest it does get easier after awhile.

      Thats fine, no worries.

i would suggest not concentrating on creating new pages but making sure that the pages whcih ARE up have good on-site SEO, lots of good unique content and many good quality links pointing back to it.

Once you do that you will start gaining rankings.

Be patient and wait for a while after building your links. They will show up eventually. But that is of course for the links that were done properly. As far as blog comments are concerned, don't forget that at times no matter how decent and relevant your comment may be, a webmaster or blog owner can just decide to delete it alltogether. And that will never show show up. So if that happens, don't sweat it. juts move on.

ok because the pages for each phone have just the specifications about the telephone. the keyword I am trying to rank for is best prepaid phones hence the domain name. How would on-site SEO help these pages in reference to the main keyword I am going for?
