When you do KW research, do you go by "broad", "exact", or "phrase"?

Also, what are the real differences between all of these?

Thanks in advance!

Exact -- this is the number of searches that the EXACT keyword you typed in is getting (dog training). Phrase is the number of searches that all the keywords that include the exact keyword you entered are getting (dog training, dog training advice, tips on dog training). Broad is the number of searches that all the keywords that contain your keyword in any order are getting (dog training, training a dog, dog training tips, training a big dog).

Well, it depends, if you want to run a adwords campaign, usually for GDN (Google Display Network), you need to have 3000 to 5000 keywords and you then create Ad groups with these keywords and you go for broad to get as many related keywords as you can. If you are running adwords campaign on search network, you want to target your ad to avoid wasted clicks and it means you don’t want your ads to be shown to the audience which is not targeted. You probably go for exact while using KW tool (well you also use negative keywords for this purpose too). For other purposes, for example to find long tail keywords you also use broad when using KW tool.

That depends. If you use broad match for all the keywords, then you will get relatively high clicks, but at the same time,it;s not that related.for your brand, you can use exact match.
