Hey guys,

I have read somewhere you should link to self in first sentance/paragraph of a page. Sounds a bit odd.

I don't mind linking to another page of the same site, or could even link to further down the page but a link that reloads the same page seems pointless.

Whats your opinions / experience?

It would be very easy for Google to filter that out, but who knows if they do. It's sort of pointless to link to the same page, but the anchor text you use may be beneficial.

I would say it gives you next to none juice at all, the serps are a big voting based system and this here is liking voting for yourself, if that were the case we would all be winners. Ranking comes from other high authority pages linking to you, the more different IP addresses linking to you the higher you will rank.

One reason Wikipedia has as big of an impact on the SE is BECAUSE of all the interlinking webpages.

    Hi,
Yes indeed a link to another page of your site is very good.
Well in the beginning of the first sentence.

      What in the world??

I seriously beg to differ mate.

Interlinking the web pages that make up your website is important for a number of reasons, but the most important reason, for our purposes here, is that of increasing the visibility of your website in the search results of the major search engines.

Visibility, or a better search engine ranking, means that more traffic, or customers, will go to your site. This in turn converts to more sales, on a product-focused web site that is properly designed.

I do it. One advantage is if someone lazy scrapes your content you may get a free backlink.

It is good practice to have a link back to the home page on every other page like linking the logo but to have a link that reloads the same page on every page sounds like a waste of time.

The point is to link to your main page where your sign up form is from a another page from the same website that is providing for instances free information on a related subject. Google classes this as internal linking and it helps to illustrate that your content is relevant and consistent through out your website.

Well, many webmasters adopt this strategy to conserve PR of their web page. This is called loop linking.

This neither good nor bad strategy... but yes, this type of linking seems pointless to me too.

In SEO, I try not to even care about what google likes or doesn't like. The question you should be asking yourself is, do humans like it? Does it benefit your reader to click the link and reload the page? LOL, I don't think so. There are a lot of myths out there regarding SEO, and this is definitely one of them.
