Static Page

Hello, Fellow Warriors!

I just set my websites main page to static (In wordpress settings), because one pop-up we were testing wasn't working properly.. It's good now, but I'm wondering, can this affect my Google rankings? Does anyone have experience with this?

      I meant, if I use Static page in wordpress (Wordpress dashboard>Settings>Reading) instead of latest posts, can this be harmful for my Google rankings?

        Nope. If the URL has changed then you should do a 301 redirect, but in Google's eyes there's not really a difference between post vs page.

    I think search engines like to see regularly updated content - so for some of your homepage to update could be beneficial. It does not need to completely change every week though - just a few new lines of content may be enough (like a summary of the latest posts, for example).

    That said I have seen lots of pages and web sites that have not been updated in years and still are at the number one position.

    When you use Wordpress as CMS, your front page is usually a static page.
    And your actual posts are categorized.

    but should I optimise the page selected to be in frontpage? google will change the metadescription showed in search results?

      I'd optimise it in the sense that it should contain good content, title, meta description (etc).

      I'd imagine that the meta description shown in Google would change, yep.

    I didn't understand the question and the whole discussion going on here. Is there any feature in Wordpress that makes the homepage or a page static? Can someone tell me how does this really matters?

    Depends how long you have had it down for really, your ranking may drop if you've had it down for a while. Dont worry about it if its been down for a short amount of time

    i dont think there is any prob as long as the other pages provide unique contents...if your static page is the one that let user to opt-in, it will looks fine...

    A Wordpress site of mine which has a static page as homepage (and it has no posts at all) has stayed on page 1 of Google for the last 10 months. I have not changed the content in these last 10 months. This site has about 50 backlinks which I built 10 months back and then stopped building backlinks altogether. Even after Panda update, my site is still on page 1.

    Having said that, If your Wordpress site's main URL (with posts as homepage) is ranking well for a keyword (or a set of keywords) and you change the homepage to a static page, then the site's main URL will no more rank well for that keyword (or the set of keywords). You will have to optimize the static page for that keyword (or the set of keywords) to regain good rank.

    In this scenario, if you add new posts to your site regularly, they will not show on your homepage. If your sitemap gets updated after each post, Google will still see your site as updated regularly and will crawl your site frequently and index new posts. These new posts will rank individually for the targeted keyword/s.
