I can't find an adsense friendly WP theme for my recipe site.

However, I have found a normal WP theme that I like. Is it possible to optimize this theme for SEO and adsense by using plugins?

If so, what plugins do you recommend that I use?

The normal WP themes seem that you just need to add the adsense code to a text widget on the side. It seems quite simple to do. But I have seen other places that say something about php etc which I don't have a clue about.

Any advice?

Hmmm verify your theme's default h1 tag for your homepage. It should be set on your content's title. Configure your theme's permalinks, and install All-in-one SEO pack.

Nothing else to do really, just add your adsense code wherever you want to place it.

Can I just do an H1 tag for each post. Is that what you mean?

Also, how do i configure the theme permalinks.

I do have All-in-one-SEO pack installed so at least I get one thing right!

Gale 10 says: Yes you can do that. You will need to put the code for your adsense into the theme by going to appearance - editor on the dashboard.
      Please could you explain this?

Ideally, I would like an adsense theme like the one in macaroniandcheese.net which I really like. Do you know of one like this I could use (free if possible!)?

    Hi,

Yes you can do that. You will need to put the code for your adsense into the theme by going to appearance - editor on the dashboard.

One tip is to copy the html that you are about to change to a notepad doc, and then if you do something wrong you have a copy of the original. I have found that doing that gave me a bit of confidence in altering code. Although nowadays I just risk it...........

I hope you get on ok.

    Best wishes,

    Hi,

You just need to go to install themes and look for different themes, there are literally thousands to choose from. There are loads of free themes.

When you get your adsense ad you are given a piece of coding. You need to add that to the theme.

Some themes are what is called adsense ready and you just put in your pub code.

But others you need to add the whole code to the html.

You go to appearance - editor. You find sidebar.php, assuming you want your adsense in the sidebar. You add the code. It is best to find something with a closing tag which looks like /something>, such as /div> or /a>.

Then you add your adense code after that.

Save it, and see where the adsense box turns up.

Since I do not know very much about html, this is how I do it. But there will be lots of people on here that know much better ways. But this should get you started.

My favourite plugins are xml sitemap, easy privacy policy, all in one seo. These are free.

Paid favourites are clickbump seo, wpsyndicator, digiarticleblaster.

    Hope that helps,

Thank you so much for all the info.

    One final question (I think!).

Is it possible to put the adsense code in the actual blog post so it shows up more central than the sidebar?

Yes, of course you can put the AdSense code into actual posts! There are some quite good WordPress plugins that will automatically do that for you, if you don't want to edit your theme files manually. You would have to edit single.php and for example place the code below the content part.

    Edit: Eep. Too slow.

    That's definitely possible.

You'll just need to insert the code within single.php for post full view, page.php for page view and index.php (sometimes loop.php instead) for the homepage depending on where you want to display ads.

However, there are also plugins that do all of this for you. Just go to 'Add New' under the plugins tab, search for 'adsense' and pick one that meets your needs and has a relatively good rating.

Check out the Clickbump Bundle - the theme is a 12-in-1 that is SEO- and Adsense-optimized, and obviously the Clickbump SEO plugin only helps the process.
