I searched around but couldnt find much.

If .com is already taken, what is the next best one, two, three, etc...? Thanks.

When you start going for things after the .com is taken you had better be careful that you're not going for trademarked names. This will cause you more legal hassel then you want. However if there are no copyrights or trademarks involved then any of the other domains will be good. There is no magic .net .org etc that ranks higher then the others. Its all about your SEO.

Yes I am 100% agree with it, however you can try some other combinations like "-" in domain name and try to get a .com. If you still not find it then you can choose other extensions e.g, .biz or .net matching your website nature.

Depends on your purpose and how you want to get traffic.

      Here is my personal rule.

I need a dot com if it is a main business.

Main business meaning I am looking to be the top person with that trade name.

I will google the dot com if it is not available and see if it is trademarked or just a parked page.

If I am just looking for keywords in a domain the extension does not really matter.

IE: it is a generic thing like "best brussel sprouts dot com" well, if the dot com is gone and nothing is really going on there then grab the dot net if you want or what ever.

What you need to know is there are generic names and real business names.

If you are going for something generic, you can pretty much use any extension. You need to look how what ever is already gone. You need to look it up and see if it is ranking or if it is just parked or just a simple thing you can outrank.

In the end - it really is a very small part of seo to have the keywords in the main domain.

And other things really depend on where you are driving traffic from. You don't have to rank #1 if you know how to drive the traffic.

I like .info sites. They're cheap. They are perceived by most as the least salesy. And they can rank well too. You only lose if you want to sell it, the value is not as high in the buyers world.

if you're worried about SEO qualities, don't be. They will all rank similarly. In my experience sometimes .info's rank faster but of course it all depends on the content of the site.

.org or .net or .info or .us (just no privacy on .us) then -.com -.org or -.net or -.info

Exact is generally better as the hyphen dilutes your keyword density.

    Example: DogTraining.com 11 Characters vs Dog-Training.com 12 Characters which is 91.6%

I rank them in this order:
    • .com
    • .net
    • .org

It's really just a personal preference though. I usually don't mind if either the .net or .org is available but I just like the look of .net better.

If the main ones are gone

      • .com
      • .net
      • .org
      • .info
Would putting a x or a 9 at the end of the domain work?

or say if is plumbersrus.com is taken doing plumbers-r-us.com a better option?

if the .com is taken i would go for .net or .org. If those are taken as well. I would start to add dashes. The only problem with dashes is that they don't sell well. If you end up selling the website I have seen that a non dashed websites have sold for more than a dashed website. You could possibly add now at the end or add buy in the beginning or a the at the beginning.

.com taken? Go for .net, .org. Those taken? Add hyphens to the .com. Taken as well? Go for the .info. A lot of people avoid .info's, but I haven't seen enough evidence to show that they rank any worse than a .net, for example. .info not available? Add an extra word after your keywords.

.com gives you a better spirit to advance with you works than when you have to believe you are sharing the traffic of a domain based on TLD with another person.
