Is backlinking useful or worth the time for new websites ?? less then 2 months old websites ?

I would read a few more threads on this forum about backlionking and you will soon find the answer is yes but there are certain things you need to do/avoid.

Yes, it is useful in some ways. But for new websites, since we are more like relying on Google and its updates, it's better for you to read the Google webmaster guidelines.

It will keep you on the right track in optimizing your website.

as other have mentioned ..........backlinking is very much like adding the final ingredient to your dish...........if you do not do it then your dish will be bland and not eaten...............ok this is my stomach speaking but hope you get the point..................

Absolutely! In fact, one of my newer sites went from a PR 0 to a PR 1 in about 2 months with consistent linking with articles (not zilliions, but about 10 good articles), directories and forum postings within the site niche. This was before the recent Panda update, though.

Still, in my opinion, backlinks are definitely important. And, as stated elsewhere in these forums, it is something you have to work at on an ongoing basis, because you will find that you will both gain and lose links over time.

It's just the nature of the beast.

Depends on where you do your backlinking. I have paid for thousands of backlinks with little results, yet relevant backlinks I create myself have provided a much greater return.

i cannot understand why you have doubt on backlinks? if backlink is not useful, what can do well for online marketing?
i think maybe you think it cost too much time? or it can not provide you very obvious effect? or you can not find ways to get enough backlinks? no matter what, we can not ignore the importance of backlinks.
i do not know, what exactly is you problem, if you can say it in detail maybe i can give you some suggest.

You may try to experiment yourself. I've been told to build more backlinks in order to increase my traffic and I need more time to research the right link to link back to my website. Otherwise, I can simply link to any site I want and that doesn't show any traffic. I will yes, it is important.

Build quality authority backlinks slowly, mix them up with high PR and low PR and don't ever blast too many links to your site if you really want to get high rankings.

Really important. Google rates your website on high relevant PR backlinks - the more you have, the more popular you look to Google. Best mix different types of backlinks so that it looks more natural - use forum links, blog links, homepage links etc. Build them up slowly - dont go blasting 1000's of links at once or it will have an adverse affect on your site.

  Backlinks help but I would also argue that aging your site plays a huge role in the process...
  
  I have a bunch of crappy MFA sites that earn 5-40 bucks a month with top google rankings that only got their rankings after I left them alone for a few months (was burnt out on IM). All of them had some backlinks but none of them had great backlinks.
