Stop the SEO Madness...

Hi Guys,
After having done SEO for 14 years now, I have noticed that it is getting crazier by the year. All the craziness about social bookmarking, posting on forums, blogs, pinging and all the automated submission software are in many cases a waste of time (I know many ppl will kill me for saying this).

But if you step back for a second and truly look at what works online, you will find the free viral concepts that provides top notch value such as google themselves, Facebook and many other useful apps/online services etc. So ask yourself, do they participate in the above activities?

So if you have a mediocre idea/product or are in a very competitive field and you follow what everyone else is doing (blog comment, forum posting, pinging etc), what do you think will end up with your own website?

The online market is very competitive more now than ever so if you are to make it big, you need a great concept (bigger than the average idea) and a solid viral strategy and you may make it...

Good Luck
JH

It depends on what your goals are. Hitting it "big" is as much about strategy as it is luck. Most people just want to earn a living online, for which normal SEO is fine. But you're right in that word of mouth is infinitely more powerful. It just requires an excellent product (that many are incapable of creating), money (usually), a ****load of hard work, myriad skills, and a little bit of luck.

Mainly, what I'm saying is that the examples you put forth are outliers and aren't indicative of how useful a given strategy can be. Amazon did really well with affiliates, for example. Not one strategy will be >>> everything.

True... Somebody who is trying to rank a site for ex. "how to dunk a basketball" will not have the same goals and marketing strategies as a site like facebook.

Yes SEO is getting more complicated by the day, but if you look at the bright side, since the barrier to entry and managing a successful online business is getting raised, it kind of lowers the competition.

Figure out things about SEO others do not know about and there is a lot of money to make
