Hi there,

I've observed a rather strange thing on one of my blogs recently, which is, I get about 40 spam comments a day (e.g.: "Wait, I cannot faohtm it being so straightforward." "Great hammer of Thor, that is powerfully hepflul!").

This in itself is not strange at all, however, all the comments link to websites like Google, Yahoo, Bing and Facebook. What is that supposed to mean? What's the benefit to the one who makes them?

Opinions are welcome.

They are sometimes spammers just to check that the comment is approved or not. If it's approved, they will attack your site with 100s of comments (this time using their money website.) Many blogs have system like if the 1st comment of any person is approved, then all the future comments will be approved automatically.

Sometimes there are real people who found your website from searching on google, yahoo, facebook etc and thus write google.com or yahoo.com in the website section.

Like the poster above said, they are testing your site to see if it auto approves comments.

Yep. They are scraping auto approve blogs. List providers do this all day everday.

In the Discussion section of the Wordpress Settings, there is a checkbox which is labeled "Comment author must have a previously approved comment." I think it is checked by default. So if you leave it checked, and approve one of these comments, you are telling the spammers to come back and spam your website to death.
