Hi Guys!

Is it ever to late to change keywords?
Somehow I believe I might have targeted one with a little
more competition that I wanted...

Thanks Guys

Not an issue! Just make sure it's relevant to your original keyword and you'll be fine. When I started my blog I was trying to rank for 'marketing ideas' but I actually rank for a lot more similar keywords that the keyword I was originally targeting.

You don't want to be tied to just one keyword anyway. The best thing is to go with a small group of related keywords and TEST the results. When you find the best one, use it, but keep testing it against a new small group of related keywords. It's an ongoing process, and not only will you change, so will markets.

Go ahead and change it. I won't tell anyone.

You really shouldn't be trying to rank for just ONE keyword anyhow. How would it look if every backlink to your site had one keyword for the anchor text?

In addition... there is no such thing as too much competition.

      bretski,
So, if he targets a keyword such as "digital cameras", are you saying he can compete, and that this is wise? Also, if he is competing against Amazon, Walmart, Newegg,Abes, Target, and BestBuy, that he stands a chance of ranking high enough in the SERPs?

I am open to suggestions to change my mind, but I am in the camp that thinks competition needs to be a serious concern. thanks!

Yes, he can compete and yes it is wise and profitable. Although, he would be foolish to target JUST the keyword "digital cameras". This isn't even a keyword that I would target. "cheap digital cameras" or "used pentax digital slr cameras" or "wholesale pentax digital cameras" or "discount digital cameras"... sure... all of the above. Ranking for "digital cameras" would be an afterthought or a happy byproduct.

It's ok. Besides, it is definitely a good thing to have many keywords to target and get ranked. More visibility in search engines is also as good as more revenue.

It's never too late to change your mind. Come back to the other KW when ready. It's better IMO to stay focused on smaller success vs. nothing then build up to the more competitive ones.

It's OK. Just find some other less competitive words or some long-trail keywords. And you will find it is better for them to be ranked.

you don't need to change your keyword, just add the new keyword you want to target. you can target multiple keywords on your site. just use the 2 keywords together and you will get double chill

It's good to rank in different keywords. Just make sure that it is related to your niche.

If you think your keyword is not working for you or it does not getting rank well, then you should change the keyword according to its relevance. choose middle competitive keywords and then try. Also select more keywords and target with desire pages.

You shouldn't just be targeting one keyword phrase. Instead, you should be targeting several related keyword phrases as this will bring you more traffic. It will also increase your chances of ranking for a bigger keyword if you can rank for several less competitive keyword phrases. The search engines will be like "if this page is getting all this traffic for this keywords, then this page must be really relevant to what people are looking for" and send you traffic for the bigger, more competitive phrases related to it. I hope this makes sense.

What I've taken from your responses is that
The key is to have multiple keywords and to combine them if possible.
Also it is cool if I do change my keyword...

If you are working for keyword software development for company providing services from california, it is obvious than after some input of work you will easily rank for the keyword software development california.

If the keywords are related then just go ahead with it. But you should be ready if your site goes down in ranking after targeting new keywords.

1st you should use these tool (adwords.google.com/select/keywordtoolexternal) for suggest keywords. by tool you can find your site related keywords. Now you get some other less competitive words or little long follow keywords.

Change is the nature rule but in case of ranking we can't change too much single keyword for competition. If possible then go ahead what is the problem put all effort for one. we can

You will be pulled up on your site under multiple kws, many long tails you never even optimized for. You should look at your log stats and see which kws are pulling up your site. Then go back and optimize your site so those kws will be even ranked higher on google. Make sense?
