I understand pinging google everytime I post an article on my blogs, but I see people talking about pinging the backlinks... what is that?

Its a mechanism to attract google spiders towards the page where you have placed your backlinks so that google can index it asap. Try bulkping.com for pinging your backlinks. Its pretty useful site.

  Your back-links is useless if they are not get indexed by Google or other search engine. It won't raise your page rank. So the purpose ping backlinks is get your back links indexed.

  Its just a technique of indexing your links fast and you can pinging backlinks. You can use free tools for this. Pinging notifies sites that accept pings, telling them to check out what you site has to share and as such gets your latest mention indexed.

My suggestion is to use pingomatic.com for pinging your backlinks, very effective and quicker.

It is basically a method of notifying the search engines that you have written or posted something new to your website or blog page. It will be good to do pinging after creating backlinks if they have not done so.
