According to my little knowledge, Keywords are the words which are used in your website contents repeatedly. If you are targeting some specific keywords than you can write your contents according to your keywords. Keywords must be used at least once or twice in a page.

You could reverse SEO your competition and see what they rank for.

Well, it does take time to create a decent keyword list, I'm afraid there is no shortcut you can take here. However, a good keyword research tool can speed things up. Lemme explain.

    1. First, start with a self-made list of 10-20 keywords that describe your business. Ask your friends or colleges to do some brainstorming to make the list diverse.

    2. Then analyze your initial keyword list using a good keyword research tool. For example, Google AdWords Keyword Tool, WordTracker, the free version of Rank Tracker or similar.

It may turn out that most of the keywords on your list are good for nothing (meaning they are either crazy competitive or no one really looks them up). In which case, it's better to have an SEO tool suggest you more keywords than come up with more search terms by yourself - will save you time.

    3. Choose the keywords with the biggest number of monthly searches and the lowest competition rate.

    4. Narrow your keyword list down to 10 main search terms you are going to optimize for. For some businesses 3-5 keywords are enough. It depends. The rest of the keywords on your list will be your additional ones that you can use if you decide.

That's it, you are all set.

In addition to the points of Sclark, it is useful to have a faq on the site and to incorporate some longtail related phrases within each article or post you make. Many web pages can show up for multiple keyword phrases and adding in ones that help to clarify your article or add additional information is good both for the reader and search engines.

Checking the results on page 1 in google can also help you to see if the phrase is too competitive as you can look at age of domains, pagerank, number of backlinks and other seo factors of your competitors.

I'll check my competitors, and take words that they are using, i just entermy competitor's site into semrush search line, and get a list of it's keywords, and then make my list adding my own ideas, or again research with semrush some long-tails.

firstly you need to write down the keywords which you know about your website, then investigate for the rivalry's website and find what keywords they are using. Use the Google adwords to analyze those keywords and clarify your own unique words for your website.
