Keyword Assistance, What To Target?

Question for the keyword gurus.
I have learned from reading the board and requesting help from you guys that I am better off targetting lower volume keyword phrases that can still generate traffic for me, instead of going after the high traffic, high competitive keyword phrases.
My website, in my sig focuses on dog obedience training, and I realize that targetting this exact keyword match right now is probably not the best use of my time and effort due to the amount of competition for it.
My question is: Since "pet" is in my domain name, should I be going after a keyword phrase that contains that word? I have read on this board that keyword phrases are easier to rank for if your domain contains part of the phrase. Cheers for feedback/advice and any constructive criticism on the site is more than welcome!

I wouldn't get caught up to much on the domain name although that's how I've ranked hundreds of sites in the past. The real question is how many times is that "pet" keyword searched for and is it even worth your time.

If you just focus on real good content (content that "real" people would want to read) and mix in some Latent Semantic Indexing which is basically 5-6 keywords related to the main keyword you are going for in that article you should do just fine.

Keep in mind you want to make sure you are doing some good anchor text backlinks on some high PR sites for the MAIN keywords you want. If you want to get real nerdy go for all of them

    Hope this helps.

check the keywords in your search engine and browse the results. Tweak your content so it contains other keywords in addition to the common keyword.

Market Samurai has a number of free videos -- which advertises their product -- but does a good job of explaining the keyword process. If you mine a good keyword combo then it is always good to have those words in the domain. Is it essential? No, but it helps. As far is the process is concerned, the keywords come first and then the domain name purchase.

This maybe a silly question, but are the results from word tracker based on daily or monthly searches? Thanks.
