If I find (mykeyword).com available,

That said, this newbie boldly ventures to guess that finding a good keyword with an available .com domain makes it that much better. Let me explain why.
Suppose you find a good keyword, go to look up domain names, and the .com is taken, along with the .org and .net. While a .anythingelse may have the potential to rank just as high on Google, the fact that there are other domains registered with your keyword means that there will be that much more competition for the keyword it's self. Everyone else vying for that key word in their domain is probably making it their main focus in their marketing strategy. You'll be competing directly with other articles based on the same keyword, other PPC campagins, blogs, you name it.
An available mykeyword.com domain means that there's likely nobody with that keyword as their central focus. Sure, it's on people's radar. That's why the PPC competition was high, and what made you notice it. A high-traffic buying keyword with low competition is almost nonexistent in PPC. But it would likely indicate space in the market where one could operate.
One could take this strategy as an additional measure of just how competitive a keyword is. If your domain search comes back unavailable for mykeyword.com, mykeyword.org, my-keyword.net, my-keyword-for-the-love of-god.something/ANYTHING!!! Well then you know you've got some competition.
So all of this just came to me in a bit of an "Ah ha!" moment. I welcome anybody's thoughts and input, and if I really am making an ass of my self, anyone with experience is welcome to put me in my place.
