Possibly for quick indexing of a site or page, but I'd think nothing much more.

I agree, imo the only reason for this might be quick indexing. I really don't see it helping out with seo other then in that instance.

Yes it is an easy way to get pages indexed but it does not have much staying power.

If it is a legit account and not bot, then using twitter will be good. However, it is a home of spammer so no value for me.

Yes. Posting tweets and replies using the same URL across 10-20 twitter accounts can actually give you backlinks on different twitter status/trends websites. I`ve done it and it works. They will eventually fall off the homepage but you will still get the juice flowing.
Most important to keep in mind is that you have to automate the process , otherwise it will take forever to do it manually.
Use something like TweetAttacks ( if you have the budget)

It's even more beneficial if you can have influential twitter users retweet your tweet. Just imagine by how much your tweet will be viewed and retweet if say an influential person on twitter having 1M following retweeted your tweets. It could poor a new trend on your tweet and can possibly contribute to your SEO campaign, having good amount and quality social media signals coming in to your site.

Twitter is nofollow and any tweets on other pages will be some flash
or script. Not backlinks in either case by any stretch of the imagination.

If you need help getting your pages indexed, man, you are in far worse
trouble than twitter will ever solve.

Just because tweets may get indexed has no bearing on anything else.

This thread will be indexed. Does not mean the links will count, be seen,
or the pages they go to will get indexed.

Google has shown many times before that it DOES use twitter and other social media websites in its rankings. Think about it, if a new product is heating up it'd probably get a lot of twitter love, so naturally search engines are going to incorporate it partially into their rankings...that's not to say you can rank #1 just from twitter, but it certainly helps.

      This is 100% wrong.

Say you have 10 Twitter accounts, each one with 5,000 followers.

Then you have a main account.

You tweet your link from your main account, and then re-tweet from those 10 accounts - instantly promoting your link to 50,000 TARGETED people.

On top of the insane amount of traffic it will bring in, it ALSO gives your link more authority in search engines. Why?

Because the more people there are tweeting about that link, the "better" the search engines think it is. PLUS, they are all "vouching" for that link, since it's a retweet.

Tweet Attacks has a re-tweet attacks module that is specifically FOR search engine optimization purposes.

So please, explain just how it is not for SEO?

I have heard many times that Twitter does matter in SEO. Facebook would too but they have a huge gate around them and Google can't index many of the pages (individuals). But the people who say Twitter does matter all make a great point, it's not only about BACKLINKS! Google is much more complex than that, and either way you look at it social media is a great way to determine if something is high quality or not.

There is definitely a reason to believe that all such micro blogging websites including Facebook and so on has considerable impact in optimisation process. Google not only considers backlink of a website but it has now become a more personalized and provide results considering number of facts. If you are logged in any of gmail ID and if those Id is either directly or indirectly connected with the promotion of any of links, you can very well watch those links shown ahead of rivals. Thus make very much clear that now optimization is not only concerned with backlinks but it is more than that.

Noone can't say if this is already implemented in G's alghorithem, BUT if you think like G, you will find this TRUE in a long shot.

Imagine that you come to the town and there is noone on the street. You are hungry and you see 2 reustaurants. Infroint of one there are no cars, but the other has the parking almost full. Where do you go to?

This is called social proof. If others are doing something, it is supposed to be good. If vitrually EVERY important/famous business is posted on Twitter and yours is not? It's logical that something is wrong with you.

So, you should have links from Twitter as other important guys have. It doesn't matter if G counts it as a juice or something else. Is says something about you. Maybe this principle is not incorporated in search algorithm today, but it's a matter of time when it will be.

Well any Social Media marketing done for SEO is not a good use of your SEO time. However if you're in the discovery of new sales channel mode then Social fits. I agree it is time consuming but... if you read stuff every day and incorporate it with that then you are actually multi tasking and benefitting from that time reading

Twitter does not contribute directly in improving your ranks but it do contribute in an indirect way. If you have reasonable number of followers people are retweeting your tweets and you are getting mentions that your site's authority will increase. Increase in authority is directly proportional to ranks of website

This is a confusing topic and the only way to settle it is for someone to do the case study.

My thinking is that twitter will help you with "social search rankings":

Official Google Blog: Introducing Google Social Search: I finally found my friend's New York blog!

Twitter can also help you get on page 1 for topics that are "trending".

I'm not sure how many people really care about "social search" or these flash in the pan "trends".

If someone has actually gotten a keyword (like say 'how to train a dog') onto page 1 with no-follow Twitter backlinks I'd love to see it.

I read an interesting article that said that both Yahoo Answers & Twitter were no-follow but had a special feed for data into Google where the links were actually do-follow.

While it sounded somewhat kooky that this would happen it did some feasibly (it was a XML feed of site data).

I don't have a link to that anymore but it's pretty obvious to me that if you want to get a page indexed quickly than either of these sites will do it within a minute.

Twitter continues growth in the industry of social media marketing is getting even stronger every day, which is why SEO experts have seen the potential of using Twitter for marketing.
Participating in very active conversations enables you to potentially communicate first hand with millions of users. You can use these conversations to share information, give advice and occasionally incorporate your website as a useful resource means a bigger chance of having people to visit your site.

I did a test with a product of mine. I sold it for a tweet. I got 1000 tweets in the first week. I went from #5 to #3 on a highly competitive keyword, but after the "buzz" I dropped to #4. So a powerful Twitter campaign means you will need a constant flow of tweets, if not, it's better to not start with it.

Google HATES Facebook. I don't believe they count Facebook. Maybe they do, but they don't care a lot about Facebook (they give them low weight)

you can add a link to your twitter profile that has value, otherwise twitter in terms of SEO is only good for fast indexing. All links posted in tweets are 'nofollow' -
can you imagine if you just had to post links on twitter for SEO? the (already tons) amount of spam would be unmanageable. You could litereally open 1000s of twitter acounts and have them building links for you all day long. >> doesnt work that way <<

hot tip though - twitter accounts are good to rank with, so if i you have a good one you can build links to it and rank that along side your money sites! - (you can also make multiple profiles with the profile link pointing to your site (however they do not have much PR if not any to speak of!)

Search Engines are moving more and more towards Social Media - how can they not.

Obviously they are aware of manipulation so you've got to make quite a dent before you get any real leverage - that's where retweeting comes into play!

Google also takes into consideration the authority of Twitter accounts that tweet/retweet. So that's the number of followers someone has, age of the account, and even how many times their tweets are retweeted - if they can get that information.

For larger websites I use Twitter for authority and Social Media presence. For smaller websites I use Twitter for indexing purposes, with the following FREE tools:

    - OnlyWire
    - Ping FM
    - PixelPipe

As I said, they're free BUT they take a long arse time to setup up - you basically create accounts with Social Media websites and then blast updates to all websites you have an account with, simultaneously.

As an extra, I do my day's tweetin' for 20 minutes in the morning by scheduling tweets through Tweetdeck!

There is certainly reason to believe that all these micro-blogging sites, including Facebook and so on, is of great importance in the optimization process. Google does not only backlink from a website, but it has now become a more personal and show results, given the number of facts. If you are connected to a Gmail ID and Id is directly or indirectly involved in the promotion of one of the links, you can very well see those links that appear in front of his rivals. This makes it very clear that now the optimization is not just backlinks, but more than that.
