quick question

i've got a website that i've been pounding seo for a couple of years and it's doing fairly decent with search engines.

i just bought a domain that has my number one keyword in the name that i'm trying to rank high for. it's a brand new site not a seasoned one.

my question is do i do a 301 redirect from my two year old site to the new one or vice verse.

I'd do neither.

I would create some unique articles on the new domain with contextual links to your original site.

  i'm a service and repair business mainly in residential homes. you are saying for the new domain, i should write unique relevant articles with anchored text pointing to the older site? the new domain has the exact keyword. if i don't do the redirect then i'll have to provide my contact information on the new domain so customers will be able to contact me. i was thinking do a redirect from the new to the old and backlink to the new site with exact match keyword. just trying to figure a plan. thanks

OK, I get a clearer picture of what you are trying to do now.

You certainly could go with the plan to do the 301 redirect from new to old and add backlinks for that particular keyword to the new domain.

How well (or not) are you ranking for that particular keyword now?

Have you done much backlinking for that keyword to your current site?

  my old main site is ranked on the first page of google with the keyword but not at the top. i've pounded and put a lot of time into articles and backlinks to old site to get there. i know the big G likes the same keyword name in the domain. i thought about buying up all the popular keyword searched domains and backlink to the sites that has the keyword name in it and then do a redirect to my main site. do you think this will work to get to the top and is it worth the time and effort? i use google adwords keyword tool to find the most searched out keywords for the type of business i'm in. i don't run adsense. i'm looking to get customers from an internet driven city to do the repair and installations. i'm in houston, btw.

For your situation, conventionally, I believe you should do the 301 redirect.

However, from what I've heard, even though this shouldn't happen, you do get a Google penalty.

The BEST problem you can have is competing with yourself. :-)

Get some content written for the NEW domain and get it ranked separately. If your first site is doing decent money wise, you can probably outsource the linking and seo to save yourself some time. I've had the #1 and #2 spots before for one keyword, with two separate websites - definitely a GOOD problem to have!

  Personally, I think so - others might say otherwise. I've out ranked .com's with .co's before...I've also done that with a .info before too...

You asked since you already doubt it, which mean not a good sign. You never know before you try. But once you done it, it's not easy to go back as it was. People can tell you what they "think" ,not how Google works exactly on your situation. So, be careful. Every site has its own unique situation when it comes to Google's eyes.

  another question. having swf flash videos or slideshows on the homepage hurt your rankings with the big G?
