So i've had a group of sites for a while now. At first my CPC was pretty bad and for about a year my click through was terrible. I used to get alot of "public service ads" and stuff and figured that adsense really didn't know what to show on my pages. Lately I've been doing alot of link building and stuff and I've noticed both my CPC and my clickthrough are improving, yet it could be attributed to more then one thing as i've been improving my sites from many dirrections and and I am not sure what exactly has led to the improvement. I was wondering if someone might be able to better explain my hunches. Here are some of my questions if someone knows:

1) How exactly does google determine what ads to serve? is it totally dependent on the content on the page that is is on? or does it look at the entire site to determine what is relevant? Or do they look at what keywords are pointing to my site/page?
2) I think google may increased CPC with age of a site as they feel it is more respectable and therefor more trustworthy?
3)Does a higher ranking for keywords in the search engine make my site more relevant for that keyword and therefor increase the chances that an ad targeting that keyword will appear, which leads to:
4) Will having a decent ranking on several keywords increase the competition for ads on your site, and therefor increase the CPC that you will receive due to having more "bidders" for your ad space?
5) If 4 is correct, should I do some targeting of relevant, highly competitive keywords that I'll never rank well in just because a lot of advertisers target those keywords?

Thanks in advance for any feedback that you can provide

  • 1. While there is no one outside of Google who knows this formula, I find that Ads that are buried within content will display more targeted results. Google is looking at the content on the page for sure, they are also for sure looking at Title Tags. I suspect like all Google Crawls Adsense Bot or Search Bot... incoming anchor text plays a factor. In addition it is my belief that the sites you link out to tell the Adsense bot something about the page content and play some role in types of Ads they will display. Finally Google is following around everyone on the web... this is FACT. So if they were looking at Baby Diapers then came to your site about Ford Trucks it's still very likely they will see ads about Babies on your Ford Truck site. This happens to me as I am browsing all the time. GEO Targeting is also used heavily. I find myself seeing ads based on my location whether I want them or not.

    2. I'm not sure Age is that big a factor, but definitely pages that have higher PageRank tend to have more accurate Ads. I see this across all the sites I own and when comparign ads on competitors sites. Low PR sites (And perhaps sites that are less than a year old) tend to get a lot of the junk inventory and Public Service Ads.

    3. Maybe. It would make some sense when you consider that there can be PR sites of ZERO on the Top 10 listings for very specific keyword Phrases. Google does this in search by highlighting the keywords you searched for so it makes sense that they would use this same logic on Adsense Crawls. But they may actually still be placing more weight on GEO Targeted results and IP Tracking/Following.

    4. As I understand the way ads are placed by bidders in Adwords... the placement within a block of ads is based on both CPC and Relevance and Performance. Bottom line is how would you measure this? You just need to have as high as possible PR for each page on the site. On my sites that have higher ranking pages I get better ads.

    5. That would be interesting to test, but probably wouldn't yeild results unless theme based. Why would an advertisers chose your site? Only because of the keywords? I believe that most would not dig that deep. They would look at your site and see if it's related to their products then decide. Afterall it doesn't cost them anything to get traffic unless they get clicks. So the Content on your site is what Advertisers are looking for.

This of course is based on my Experience and Speculation. Without being a Google insider that is all we have.
