I've used Google's keyword research tool and Market Samurai.

    I prefered Market Samurai.

I feel it gives you more of a breakdown and better insight when
deciding to go with a niche or not.

I agree. Market Samurai is Excellent; although by using the Google Keyword Tool you will find pretty much everything (at least the basic important info) that you need to on specific keywords.

If you really want to make a SERIOUS impact with SEO and Promotion, I highly recommend you get Internet Business Promoter (IBP for Short). It is absolutely the best SEO/KEYWORD/Website Promotion & Analytics tool available. Period.

      I hope this helps!

If you want something that's easy to use and saves you hours of analysing keywords then I'd recommend checking out Brad Callen's Niche Finder.

We use a mix of Market Samurai and Googles Keyword Tool.

Also, don't underestimate manually checking out the top 10 pages and their backlinks, if you want to find out a more precise measure of rankability you should check out various factors of the top 10.

For example, Page Rank, Age, DMOZ listing, Title Tags, Backlink Quality, Size of Site, etc.

hmmm... The google keyword tool doesn't show you anything related to SEO or how easy/hard it is to rank that word in Google.

It just shows you search counts, and minor CPC data.

Niche Finder, on the other hand, takes the Google keyword tool and shows you the stuff that we really care about... which is if we can realistically get a word to the top of Google. Get traffic to it. And make money from it.

Google kw tool is NOT used to analyze the top 10 competition on Google
Google kw tool is to FIND THE KWs and see what their total monthly searches are

Then to analyze top 10 competition use a paid tool like Market Samurai or
        Traffic travis

    Kw Research =?

    Google kw tool
Why? Even though the paid tools use their database (Googles) they have to use their own servers to let all the users of their software (example Market samurai and Traffic Travis etc)
    This slows things way down.
Ask anyone if Market Samurai kw reserach is fast? or AS FAST as Google Kw tool?
    Its painfully slow

So I use Google kw tool for kw research instead

    Now for
Top 10 Competition analysis The consensus seems to be

    1. Free tools a lot use SEO Quake for this
but this takes a lot longer, than paid tools, and its not nearly set up as neatly

    2. For Paid tools?
The consensus seems to be Market Samurai or Traffic Travis
There may also be others for example
    for indepth backlink analysis?
SEO Spyglass is way better to do this...............and more indepth if you are just talking about Backlinks analysis

So what I do is this

    For KW research?
Google KW tool (super fast and uses Google database)
IMO Do NOT use MS for kw research . Why? It takes WAY too long, waaaaaaaaaaaay too long

    For Top 10 Google Competition
    ?:
Paid version of Market Samurai(this particular tool on MS is super fast and I have never had a problem with it)
Takes about 30 secs per kw

If you do not already have Market Samurai or Traffic Travis (i think they are each 97 dollars)
you only need one. I would highly recommend going to youtube and watching videos of how to use them and see which one you like before you buy

Try semrush, if you're intrested in a web-based service. It's awesome in suggestions of keywords, only disadvantage that at the end of the month some of the parameteres of the keywords are not very accurate.

I use the Google Keyword tool and it works great if you are researching for US / Canadian clients.

Also try XPathBuilder for keyword ideas. I like this tool because you can quickly grab keyword ideas from Google Suggest/Instant in gDoc file. Then use the suggested terms and plug them into the keyword tool to see what you get
