Question on domain redirect for SEO

  • keyword A is fairly easy to optimize for
  • domain keywordA.com is purchased
  • main goal is to get traffic to moneysite.com

Ideally, the plan is for keywordA.com to rank well for Google search "keyword A" in order to funnel in traffic.

Here's where I get lost.

Does a site need to be built on domain keywordA.com? Or simply owning and hosting the domain and 301 redirect on CPanel? Doesn't the lack of website prevent Google from indexing the domain?

Or is the solution to build any site (e.g., a WordPress blog) and link building and other SEO until it is ranked? And then do the redirect? Will the redirect remove/take back the Google ranking?

Otherwise, is the only solution to simply have website keywordA.com developed and advertise within the site (e.g., on side widget) for visitors to visit moneysite.com?

Or perhaps I have it all wrong? Any clarification much appreciated. Thanks!

You could come up with another or similar domain.

Google does rank web pages, not domains.

A 301 is rather useless if you are building links to the domain
that is redirected to another. You are better off choosing
a domain, whatever it is, and build a site and all backlinks to
    it.

A 301 redirect does mean the site did/does exist, but is
    now being redirected to another.

Why go to all the trouble of building a site, then obliterating
it with a 301? It does not last and it's not really what a 301
    is for.

I am not sure really what your goal is. Why not build all links
    to moneysite.com?

Many of us do this. We build a boatload of sites, build content,
then build more websites to funnel traffic back and forth.
    No 301 needed.

You could do a one page website on keywordA.com as well,
and link to the other one. Similar to the site network above,
    just small.

If you just have a domain using a 301 redirect, there's nothing
for google to go on, really.

Using EMD's have their advantages but you want the links to contribute to your main site. I had a site that I did something similar to and it seemed to work out well for me. I simply created many EMD domain add-ons to my main site via Cpanel and directed the path to the public_html and/or page of my main site. In short my main site had 30+ domains... fully re-branded so to speak, anyways it worked for me and maybe it can work for you too.
