In short: It's a prominent source of primary content

A website that is seen by the search engines as an authority on a certain topic. These sites are considered trusted sources and feature prominently in the search results.

I've got an authority site. 15,000 articles, millions of visitors a month, dozens of comments on every post.

This gives you the ability to rank in Google for almost any keyword.

Definitions vary. But my own personal definition of an authority site is "a site that is linked to and respected by thousands of people who often reference its material."

For example, for Internet Marketing news and events, IMNewsWatch would be considered an authority site. In the SEO and Internet Marketing worlds, authority sites would include sites like SearchEngineJournal, SiteProNews, WebProNews, PromotionWorld, CopyBlogger, SearchEngineLand, MarketingProfs and ProBlogger just to name a few.

And while some sites enjoy more authority than others, the two common denominators are, the sites are all highly-respected, and they all have a large and loyal following.

An authority site is a site that Google trusts. It can be trusted and an "expert" in a niche or more generic like "wikipedia".

many site between PR4 -PR9 ....You dont need any one to show you this site you come across them every day .use SEOQUAKE A RANK checker on your firfox it will show you all highly rank site when ever you are searching ..so when you see them dont just let them go do something

You can easily outflank Wikipedia. They get all the head terms, but you can easily get the longtail terms they aren't ranking for.
