Outranking an About (dot) com page

Generally speaking, how difficult is is to out rank an About (dot) com page for a particular search term. If those types of pages are ranked high would it indicate easier or tougher competition to beat? Anyone have any experience?

    Hi Charlie,

    Generally speaking, they are slightly less than average difficulty to outrank.

    About.com isn't selling anything but ad space, so a website that is focused on a commercially viable keyword should be able to apply more aggressive promotional efforts to overcome an advertiser supported page.

    I put them on the same level as Amazon if considering outranking as moderate difficulty. Wikipedia & Google Places/Maps would be considered higher difficulty.

    You'll need BOTH quality and quantity to overtake them in all cases. Starting off with an aged domain will also help.

      Also, remember not all About.com pages have the same authority. Some, actually have numerous backlinks from other sites referencing that page. Therefore, making those particular pages a bit more difficult to outrank.
