How to rank a picture based website

I have a website that is based upon images, in that the main content of the website is the images. Now, obviously i use 'alt' tags on the images, but that alone will not be enough to rank it highly. What other methods are there for ranking a site that does not require a large amount of text? Do i need to make pages full of text simply for SEO purposes and somehow hide it from the user? That doesn't sound like a good idea but i'm not sure how else I can do it other than by creating extra text for search engines that is unnecessary for the human users.

    You can add text captions below the image to add text to a page for seo. Each image can have a description/caption.

    Also, backlinking images works the same as pages, If you want to rank in Google Images.

    The best strategy? Pay attention to what others are doing and what is working....

    Off hand you need LINKS to your site, therefore create the ability for users to link to your images/sites by making it easy for them to get the codes they need to share. Including, BB Code, html, etc.

    Also make sure that SOCIAL plays a big part of your strategy and site. Allow users to easily share the pictures on your site.

    Things like this will go a long way. Stand out from your competitors as well. Embrace a niche and get the to actively use your site. Its how many of the larger photo sharing websites made it.
