I've always just used the Yahoo Site Explorer - until I discovered the SEO Moz Open Site Explorer (but I am not going to pay $99 a month for it!) then came along LinkClaw.

So what is your favorite backlink checking tool?

I tried the free version of Scrapebox, but it will only check backlinks that I know about. I had to load a list of links from a text file. It doesn't automatically find links. Or at least I didn't figure out how.

It depends what and how you are using them, but those ****ty tools like backlinkwatch don't tell you much of anything.

MajesticSEO is good. So is SpyGlass.

Most of the free tools will only let you download the first 1000 results. The site I am analyzing has more than 3000 backlinks.

About 8 PR3+ links didn't show up in Yahoo, so I inspected these links and it turned out they were on blogs with a huge overload of 300+ blogcomments. Not 100% sure if Yahoo is just slow with indexing these but it seems to be a trend that it only shows pages with few outbound links.
That probably has more to do with the fact that as of Monday, Yahoo Site Explorer will be no more.

I am really happy with Google's Webmasters' Tools. The only thing it doesn't give you is the PR of your backlinks which you can get from SEO SpyGlass.

SEO Spyglass for me. There is also AHRefs which is good but have limited searches daily so not ideal if you are doing a lot of checks.

Yahoo site explorer first as a SEO newbie, then switched it to search metrics domain-popularity tool, The domain popularity check shows you all backlinks for a domain, including up to 10 subpages per backlinking domain, host IP and Google PageRank.

bluebacklinks is about to release what they claim is the most acurate link checker in the world - sounds like a lot of hype but before they closed their current checker it was one of the best free online ones i knew of

SEOMoz's Open Site Explorer is free, you just need to create a free account and be logged in to use it. All of the backlinks are available in a CSV file which you can download and do whatever you feel like with. (I like to run it through scrapebox to see which ones are still live befoe purchasing an expiring domain.)

I am not making use of any of the tool , but i used to check it manually as by typing in the search box as link:domainname. Or if want to use the tool then google analytics is the best to use and to make detailed observation as from which sites you have get the higher backlinks as from which you have get the more benefit of the people engagement.
