Is it True? Linking Your Sites Is Bad?

I'm after some clarification.

Pretend we have 2 sites.

Site A and Site B.

Ive always been under the impression that if both site A and B are hosted with the same webhost, that Google doesnt like you linking Site A to Site B or even worse both sites to each other.

I really dont see the problem. Why would Google penalise a site for doing this. What if they are related? Its natural for a webmaster to want to promote their other sites right?

Do Google really penalise sites for doing this?

It's not just the matter of getting into serious problems but you have thought correctly by assuming that links coming from two websites, attached to each other, run on the same hosting account, and at the same time owned by the same owner and admin might cause some minor issues sometimes. It is estimated that the links might not be considered as very strong votes when Google crawls your sites and finds the links which act as a kind of internet bridge.

You can still find a lot of websites managed by webmasters and they are connected to each other, and if the contents are similar, the better but as you can guess, still getting one-way links, from other unique IP addresses can be the better choice. If you are determined to connect your website with each other, at least try to moderate both in a professional way, avoid posting copied materials on the pages, add fresh and unique contents to them and gather extra packs of links.

    Thanks bermuda.

Ive seen some sites do this but I guess I have no proof if they are hosted on the same server or not.

I was just seeing if there are any official statements by Google on this issue.

It seems stupid to me that Google would penalise sites for doing something so natural. Making the links not as strong is fair enough but if it actually penalises your sites then thats a whole other story.

It can of course be done but there are certain problems that can come up in doing this. When google finds it then they could see it as a webmaster linking to their sites or they could see it as a link exchange which they do not like! Also as above links from same ip will not normally carry the same weight.

You must also consider potential penalties, depending on your link building and site content then if you get a penalty on one site then this may go across to the other site.

What could ba an alternative is to mail capture on the sites and every so offen email out promoting the other site.

The links might not be as strong. But doing this once or twice shouldn't pose as a problem. I'm sure Google knows that people have relative sites that they want to link to each other.

There's nothing wrong with it, it's what the big boys do,
and it's a golden opportunity for a linking empire.

Everyone from wikipedia, amazon, ebay, gasbuddy,
about, go.com, zap2it, failblog, and many, many,
many others, do it, same IP in a lot of cases as well.

Why would you not do it?

This myth gets knocked around from time to time
by people who get hurt because their sites suck.
Period. Not linking more than one site together. It
is also propagated by people making a commission off
      of selling hosting services.

Every subdomain is considered a different "domain and site."
If the myth were true, nobody would ever link a subdomain
to anything from the main domain.

Who cares what Google thinks, as long as the sites are related.

I link most of my sites simply because I get good traffic from niche forums, it would be crazy to not recycle that free traffic.

The whole point of seo is to get traffic, If you already have traffic from other sources besides seo (and you should diversify) use it on related sites that you own!

I have a few sites that get their content from my main blog. It is great, because I have another back up to my content should anything happen. Been doing this for 2 years. I do not use it for Seo, just making sure my posts can be read by as many good eyeballs as possible.

Hey Ernie, you might want to check this thread out when it comes to linking your sites; I've been doing it for the last month or so and it seems to actually work but they're for low competition keyword phrases...haven't tried for stronger competition yet:

if your both sites seems to having not good content and only for linking then you may be penalised by google..but if both contains good content then it doesnt matters having two or more websites and linking with each others..
