Press Release for Smal, Niche Site?

I have never done a press release before. I always imagined that press releases were only appropriate for authority sites, or a site that's really unusual.

And what about Amazon review sites? Do people do press releases for these?
If so, how would you do this?

Maybe I don't understand the function of a press release. In fact, I'm pretty sure this is something I don't understand.

Any comments/advice?

    These days Press Releases are being used solely for backlinks and there has been a huge incline in free PR directories which accept any old rubbish and gets next to no views.

    I do press releases for my Amazon review site but I do them on seperate blog posts on my site which are not directly promoting any offers.

    This helps attract visitors interested in your product reviews and increases rankings due to the fact that I have highly optimized SEO blogs which are doing well in the search engines rather than 100% of my site being reviews with affiliate links in them.

    Well according to me, there isn't actually any good use of Press Release submission for small niche websites as most people of unaware as to what the product is all about....
