I have a question. If I write a new article for my blog, and decide that I want to use backlinking on the inner page, does that usually cause the top level website to go through the "google dance" phenomenon?

I have not experienced this, no.

All pages go through the dance at different times without warning.

I can relate my experience which may answer your question. I have a niche site with about 4 pages. The main page was on #1 and the sub page was on Google page 2. I wanted to improve the SERP for my page 2 keyword so I did lots of backlinking. It turned out, the Google dance struck and both home page and sub page disappeared in Google. Both got the Google dance. They came back 3 weeks later only to disappear again 2 days later as I did further backlinking. I guess this happens for new sites.

        Hi Kappa,

The "Google Dance" is a term that refers to Google doing an algorithm update or a data refresh. It has nothing to do with what you are doing to your website, you have no control over it, there is nothing you can do to cause it or to prevent it. It's useful to be aware of it simply to prevent unnecessary worry or reaction.

From my own experience, Google dance happens when you don't build your link consistently...

Is either Google see a spike of links in today, and the next day zero, it might trigger a dance! However, this doesn't mean it is a bad thing, because when your page is back, it will rank a lot higher than before - thanks to all kinds of authority backlinks!

I had a rule myself, I don't do any on page optimization when my site ranking drop, because I did it few times my sites were filtered for a whole month!

            Hi kkchoon,

So you think that an individual webmaster creating backlinks for his website will trigger an algorithm update or datacenter data refresh? That seems highly unlikely. Google Dances happen, I just don't think they could be triggered by the actions of an individual webmaster, that boggles the mind to even consider it. That creates a visual in my mind of a quick response team of engineers standing by rewrite the algorithm every time I get a handful of backlinks.

A more likely explanation would be the normal effects of QDF or Trustrank factors that are sometimes referred to as the sandbox effect. New pages and backlinks haven't been around long enough to have earned trust so they don't rank high. If you're spamming links all over the place you will have most of them removed after a short period of time. That would have a significant negative effect on your rankings.

Again, this activity is not going to trigger a major algorithm update or disrupt then regularly scheduled data refreshes. That just seems like a silly notion.

Hey Don, Great to see you here again! We have some debate here...

              I don't think, I did experienced this -

Whenever I build tons of backlinks to my site suddenly, say 400 backlinks at once! In few days, my site / page would drop many positions, although this is not always happening, but 7 / 10!

If my site is well established, this don't happen with little links, I need thousands of links in a day to temporary dance my page.

I am sure spike of backlinks would cause Google dance because the statistic speak for itself... this is from my own experience.

That's why I ask other Warriors not to freak out because the page dropped!

Yes, I do admit trust rank does affect the ranking, because Google Dance mostly happen to new site, and most of the time during backlink building.

For QDF, I don't think my site ranking would drop so much, and many of the keywords I've is not trendy type of keywords, I think QDF doesn't affect my site ranking much.

I agree that using XRumer to gain tons of spam links, and got removed in short period of time would trigger Google Filter, it's call link velocity - the rate you gain links and lost it!

It depends on how we do the "spam", if all links stay long, you won't trigger the filter, but still dancing around... because I did checked my links, they are there !

I don't like the idea of mass spamming that don't stick, but I would do proper link building (A.K.A spam!) carefully...! More legitimate way of link building for me:

              1. Article
              2. Press Release
              3. Web Directory
              4. Link Bait page
              5. Video
              6. Podcast
              7. Proper forum / blog comments

What I consider spammy link building:

              1. Bookmarking
              2. software directories
              3. One way profile backlinks
              4. General spam message on forum / blog

There are gray area with using XRumer... If you find niche related forums, and post Q&A style of comments, you can greatly increase your stick rate and many forum owners will welcome you!

Having said that, automated software still not as good as human work, but they save you a lot of time.

Well totally agree with the reply after the google updates you have to careful while creating backlinks for the pages. You should be aware of creating backlinks of which pages . If you are creating backlinks for single page then it should be considered as a spam. After latest updates it should be equally distributed as compared to all others backlinks.

I to agree google isn't updating it's alg. but instead just automatically recalculating placement in the serps for the site. This usually only happens when I ping a bunch of links instead of letting google find them on its own.

One of the main reasons for google dance is changing the metatitle of a site that is already ranked... yoou will dissapear from serps for a while.

As I know, Google dance effects on keyword position. It mean, your site is on 1st page with a particular keyword and suddenly it got out of 100 or not in search. It is google dance. It may take upto 10 days back keyword position again.

Hi there I disagree with that I think you can force a google dance by doing something wrong, for example t much backlinks in a short time of period or even a high bounce rate can end up in a google dance, your site will then rank anywhere where nobody goes and usually after a time it comes back

yep, that's right whether google get's the page while it need some of the organic traffic, some cheap links & blogs for the page, it will be cached, may be the result is different but google filtering algorithm will occurs.

It's been a month that I am monitoring one of my sites ranking while continuously building links and I can't really figure out why this is happening..

    My site's ranking are:

    12th
    92 after 3 days
back to 45 after 3 days
    103 after 4 days
    37 after 3 days
    9 after 4 days
    75 after 3 days
    18 after 3 days
    82 after 3 days

the highest is 6 and after 3 days it's back again to 46
    so on and so forth...

any recommendation to make it steady at least to a higher position is highly appreciated...

    Thanks,

Its simply dancing because you have been "continuously building links"

It will settle out eventually but keep the same link velocity up as you are doing now else it will look suspicious.

A google dance can take 3 or 4 months to settle out so dont worry just yet.

Pretty much I take it as googles servers evaluating your backlinks, attempting to figure out where you truely belong. For the most part you only see it happen after you get new backlinks, or google released an algo update.

I'm a bit of a beginner at SEO and your post kind of resonated with me.

I've been building links to a site of mine that has been established for awhile but have been "mixing" up the velocity and types of links to make it appear more natural.

If I understand what is being written in this thread, the key is to continue the same rate of linkbuilding from week to week?

I've been experiencing the Google Dance from the 1st page to the 3rd page of Google within the last couple of weeks but I expected that.

I would be curious to know when you stop building links to a given URL and when the site will settle in to its rankings.

        Anyone?

As your site ages it will become more consistent. Really to know what you need to do to grab the #1 spot, can only be answered by looking at your competition. Even then no one can give you a concrete answer. Its all trial and error. From what im reading though, it seems that link velocity is becoming bigger and bigger. Meaning you cant just order a bunch of backlinks and then let it sit. You should be getting a few backlinks for your site every day, to make things look natural. Its going more the way of looking natural with every google update

This is a common occurrence when sites are relatively new. You'll see it ranking highly for awhile then drop away for a few months then go up again. Google is re-evaluating your site to see if it should remain in their index and what keywords it should rank for.

Just make sure your site is properly optimized. Keep building quality backlinks and add good content to your site regularly to provide a positive experience to your visitors.

My site is not new and was on 3 to 5 spots before google panda was implemented. I've done a major changes on the site to get along with the current google climate and this is the thing I noticed....

Doing my periodic checks for keywords for one of my sites, and found several terms dropped like a rock while others went up. Examples:

      Drop from 87 to 257
      Drop from 212 to 374

      Up from 71 to 50
      Up from 33 to 29 :p

All these moves were from yesterday to today. The key difference is the ones that had the big drops were new terms on my site from mid/late last week. The ones that went up were established terms from several weeks ago.

Clearly google still loves to dance.

You obviously spend a lot of time in checking your rank. This is going to waste a lot of time. I think, it's better to use that time for building fresh content and internal linking. Give some time and the dancing is going to stop. You can't rule out occasional shift in position. That's because your competitors are doing SEO too.

I've pulled out a few websites from the Panda cage for a friend.

I would focus mainly on on-page SEO. Try to properly optimize it, but don't overdo it. Design a good internal linking structure, keep your keyword density around 2% and definitely edit your content to get rid of spelling errors and ''clumsy'' looking sentences. And last but not least, log in your Webmaster Tools and check if your site is being properly crawled etc.

When it comes to off-page SEO, start building quality links. By that I don't mean becoming an editor for CNN and sneaking in links to your site, I mainly mean PR1-PR4 portfolio with a couple of PR5+ links, along with some PR1+ nofollows. Do it steadily and be patient. You can RSS and ping some of them, but I suggest you leave the most for Google to find. If they are good, they will be found sooner or later

If you use any blasting tools that give you 100k PR N/A links, kill them with fire. Good luck!

Something I've noticed is that quite often when you go on a backlink-building spree your rankings might drop at first as the backlinks are being indexed, almost like the new backlinks are "confusing" Google. It can take a few days or even a month or so before they start moving up.

One example: I had a keyword ranked in #26 on Google, did a helluva lot of backlinks for that specific keyword over the course of a week, then my site dropped to #42 few days later. 2-3 days after that it went to #241 and the following day it was GONE (#500+).

BUT, 6 days after my site disappeared, it suddenly came back and was in #9, higher than it ever was. Nobody knows for sure how it works, but the key is to be patient and consistent with your backlinks as mentioned above.

Build some high PR (URL PR), relevant and dofollow backlinks. You will be fine.

To see sites go back and forth like that has to be throwing up a lot of backlinks with software and when you do that some of the backlinks stay and some are dropped out of the link graph which will cause a dance in Google, which why would want to build the links gradually over a period of time. I notice it all the time when I change my links to a different keyword, I know that the keyword will fall back for a period of time, but I keep building links naturally and then the keyword jumps back to where it was, then I use every method to maintain stability of the keyword in the top positions.

The term " Google Dance" is always describe the major update of the Google Search Engine which are regular implemented. I think this updates occurs a 36 days and 10 times per year. I would say that these all changes will be evident one minute to the next. Apart from it it also took several days to finish the complete update to the index.
So, if you are finding ranking through Google dance then it happens with new material of site. This is because Google's bot or spider is always running and finding may have detected the several results which you need to be deleted through index pages. During the Dance , Google bot always revisit everywhere. So, I would suggest that you just figure out how many sites links you have also back linking about your inner pages and how valuable these all links are to be in your website.

My keywords did an Olympic long jump from 10th position to 120th, I hope this thing settle downs soon. The Irony is after jan -17 update ( unconfirmed) you see lesser known sites have made it to the first page in rankings, sites that don't deserve to be there, Some of them i doubt don't even have good backlinks to claim that top spot on Google.

I have a one and a half year old site and 7 of my keywords ranking in google search engine have decreased by an average of 50 positions.

      Does scroogle give accurate serp?

I have a few sites that dance but they completely disappear. They go to about position 750 (not kidding). There are no set time limits either. Two of them are ranking for spot 1 and earn a decent amount everyday.

When I don't sell anything for the day - I know it's Google dancing. It's super annoying. I was able to stop one site by adding a lot of content and inner linking to the pages created. I'm not sure if that stopped it, or if it was coincidence but it stopped.

I use Page rank Checker: top 1000 Page Ranking: Search Engine Results Pages | SERPs Position Checker to check my position.

        Good Luck!

It means your site will be the second listing on Google for searches of that keyword phrase, for the region you are number 2 in, if I am understanding your question properly.

I would advise not getting too hung up on how you rank for individual keyword phases. A lot of traffic will come from keyword combinations you never even thought of. Work on getting good content with keywords onto your site.

Continue adding quality content and growing your backlinks for the site.

As stated, there is no way to actually figure out the time that your site will jump back up. But if you just let it sit and don't continue working on your seo, your chances of getting back to the top are very slim.

Are you confirm this is google dance or decrees in ranking of keywords. In google dance keywords ranking change every now and then. Means constantly change with time.

If it is google dance then stop link building for 2 to 3 days and after this time period your keywords will retain their position.

Good advice. When you starting dancing, stop building links for a few days.. This is important! After you rank, keep building but slow down a bit.

What you need to do, is to relax, and do your work
The process is natural and it will continue till it stabilize. Do what you would be doing if it wasn't happening, gaining good pr back links .
It will help Google to understand where to put your site in Serp's

I had the same problem. My site ranking continued to fluctuate from 70th to 81st and then from 81st to 42nd. One day it is not in hundred. Later the ranking was on 20th. Seriously I learnt that if ranking changes several times, it means Google is searching a place to put our site in a stable position. Now my rank is in 2nd page for more than a week. I need to build some more links to reach first page.

Been there done that and got the T-shirt. One of my websites went from page 1 on Google to page 16, then back to page 1 again after a couple of weeks. I discovered that my link building campaign was causing it. Google appeared to be temporarily penalising me for it. I changed my link building campaign to create fewer links per day, and only creating backlinks from high PR websites. Since I have been doing this, my site ranking has stayed on page one.
The other thing is how are you finding out what your rank is in Google? If you watch one of Matt Cutts' videos he says that you will get penalised for using rank checking software as it uses a lot of server resources.

In my experience, I have found that Google dances are always a good thing, if one of my sites keywords jumps 10's of places around at a time or even dissapears for a few days the end result is always a good high position, I usually find this happens when the site is newly backinked and that the dances become smaller and smaller the higher the ranking is.

I have been reading up on the "google dance" but this is a little different and doesn't seem right.

My niche website has been up now for around a month at a guess, it has a total of 9 articles (each over 800+ words), written with SEO in mind and the help of SEOprosser (90%+ SEO rating).
I have used a site map, Privacy Policy, FTC etc etc.

I started building my own backlink wheels to the website 2 weeks ago and kept up a constant of 1 to 4 backlinks per day. Which made me dance around google for my targeted key words (page 2 to 4). I decided to out source the backlink building to someone on fiverr to someone who built a 5 spoke link wheel to my niche site, then blast those 5 sites with backlinks of there own, this placed me on the front page of google and i started to see traffic coming in.

I thought it was time to monetize it with adsense and amazon (2 adsense ads per page and 1 amazon affiliate link per 800 words) so in no way stuffed with ads and amazon affiliate links, 24 hours later my website has completely disappeared off the front page and no where to be found (checked 20 pages at least).

The niche im trying to rank is easy and more of an experience site to get me ready for more competitive words.

I am confused why it exploded ? I did the google 'site:' check and its still found with all the pages indexed. (With the changes)

Should i buy more fiverr gigs ? Any had this before ?

      Thanks for all the advice.

This seems to happen a lot with low quality links. At first, they counted and you got a benefit. Then Google discounted them and you were lowered way down. You're still indexed, so it's not a huge issue.

Stay consistent and remember to get links from relative sites, meaning sites that are related to your niche. Do blog commenting, forum posts, you tube videos, a lot of different sources is always best. If you should have a blog with your name in the domain. link back to your site from there too. Good luck.

Guys, there is no need to worry about this thing called "Google Dance" for it already ceased to exist few years ago already. Right now, it was merely a term used by some so called SEOexperts so there can be something that they may blame when their or client's site fluctuate in its ranking.

As for explanation, few year ago, there was a time when rankings stay in its position for about 3 weeks wherein, wherever your page is place for a search term, it stays their for the next 3 weeks. Then after the 3 weeks period, Google updates it rankings and so "Google Dance" occurs. It is the time when all rankings were all over the place and it lasted for 3 days.

That is what "Google Dance" really is. But now, is it nothing but just a mere term used by some as an excuses for not knowing the reason of fluctuation.

In my experience things tend to jump around after links have been built to a page but if it is jumping around erratically that would suggest that the link building has been done in a dodgy way that Google doesn't like - it will calm down in time but it might not stick where you think or hope it will.

I have noticed in the past that sometimes if a website jumps around for a rank, the website will often sit one of two positions below the highest rank it gets to.

Have just seen this occur. Due to algo changes Google reflects all pages on a site when detemining strength of main page. This means a great article on an inner page will now boost the main page and cause the Google dance to occur as it determines the value of the added content.

The name "Google Dance" was in the history used to describe the period that a major guide inform of the Google search engine are being implemented. These main Google index update occurred on average each 36 days or 10 times per year. It was easiest be recognized by significant changes in search results, and by an update of Google's cache of all indexed pages. These changes would be obvious from one minute to the next. But the update did not proceed as a switch from one index to another like the flip of a switch. In fact, it took numerous days to finish the complete update of the index

Google Dance happens when your website / web page received too many backlinks in a short period, and it triggers the so called "Google Dance", where your site / page ranking is dancing up and down for a particular keyword. I guess Google might be trying to catch spammer, if you try to optimize your web page that targeting the keyword, you might trigger a temporary filter - sandbox!

So when your site is dancing around, just keep building more backlinks, and remember to mix your backlink type and anchor text (a bit of variation, 10% will do), this will help it stabilized in 1 week. During this period, DO NOT STOP the link building campaign, you want to continue building more backlinks to stabilize your keyword's ranking, stopping the campaign might result in lower ranking later.

The name Google Dance is a term used to describe the index update of the Google search engine. By using the Google Dance Tool , you can easily determine if Google has started their monthly spidering of the internet. Type in a keyword you would like to search for and choose some of Google's data centers to perform the search query on. You will then see a page displaying the search results of all the Google data centers you have chosen. If any of the results between the different data centers contain discrepencies, then you know that Google has started to spider.

I have heard something like that before, but that is not accurate. I say this because from my previous projects, each and every time we spike certain amount of links to a page, it triggers Google Dance, and this never happens if my site don't have spike of backlinks coming in! So I don't think the above theory is correct.

The Google Dance goes back to the good old days of search engine optimization. Google used to update PageRank (PR) and the search engine rankings (SERPs) on a monthly basis. It was a big event as the updates would roll out. The SEO Forums would always be awash with long threads as webmasters announced their new PR and site rankings. Webmaster World would always name each update in the same way hurricanes were given names. In 2003, Google stopped the Google Dance and went to continuous updates. The SERPs and PR are updated continuously and there is no Google Dance anymore.

I think in one Google dance means if you will not build linking consistently, google do some Algonquin and data refreshment and on this basis make site up and down. You have to back link in consistent manner and for this backlinksindexer is good and will give you good result.

The name "Google Dance" is often used to describe the index update of the Google search engine. Google's index update occurs on average once per month. It can be identified by significant movement in search results and especially by Google's cache of all indexed pages reflecting the status of Google's last spidering.

But the update does not proceed as a switch from one index to another at one point in time. In fact, it takes several days to complete the index update. During this period, the old and the new index alternate on Google. At an early stage, the results from the new index occur sporadically. But later on, they appear more frequently. Google dances.

I guess the google dance phenomenon is normal especially if your website is new. You just have to consistently build backlinks to your page/site and make sure you use white hat. It may take time to see the positive results but it's going to be worth it.

Don't worry about it that much. As long as you know you are doing the backlinks properly, you are rest assured to get better position in SERPs.

      Hi,

As for my experience, please do not change or update your contents during link building campaign, this is a very bad idea. I did that before and my site was gone forever. You can update or change your site content, but not during link campaign, this should happen before any link building campaign or 1 month after link building campaign.

Hmm, this has not been the case for me. I usually see serp gains when I go back and update content. This doesn't fly logically as well. When someone leave a comment on an article that counts as an update to the content on that page. If this was the case then every time someone leaves a comment your site would disappear. I don't think it is that simple.

I would like to make you correct first that Google dance is no more now. Actually, Google Dance used to rebuild the ranking of websites on SERPs as a result of that ranks used to get fluctuated. It used to be occurred 36 times a year. Now, Google updates its ranking on weekly basis.

If your rankings fluctuate consistently. For example: One day you rank #22 and a week later #50, 2 weeks after that you're at #38 and then #11... and so forth and so on.

This usually happens when building mass backlinks. Sites generally recover better with higher rankings than before if building proper backlinks, however, if you use black/grey hat techniques your drop in rankings might be permanent.

Lately my new site has been doing the Google dance. The one thing that concerns me is that for the primary keyword, every few hours I search for it and check, it's moved and links to a different page then the time before.

The primary keyword does appear on other pages on the site too, but more targetting the long tail of those searchers i.e 'Primary Keyword / Information'... I have a feeling I am cannibalizing the home page, but not too sure how to fix the issue.

    Thoughts?

Dancing time can vary for sure. There can be a few factors involved such as your site age, page rank, and backlinking profile, the type of link you got etc..... Some sites recover very quickly (within weeks) some take months. Sometimes sites never quite recover. A lot can be determined/effected by your month to month SEO efforts and content building strategy.

The VERY BEST thing you can do while your website dances is continue to build useful content filled links. This will help the recovery time AND help rank your site higher.

    Happy Linking

Once Google notices new links to your website, they need to reposition you. You will notice the dance after you do some linking. It is best practice to constantly be sending links to your site. This is more natural and you will have the best results, as long as your sending quality links.

I'm totally agreed with you, don't so much worry about your website position on Google index, if it is more dancing then just give some time for it and do more quality link building regularly.

Are you sure about this? In near past 2 of my sites went down and stopped linkbuilding for them and now one came back with higher positions than before, now what should I do? Like I don't think that your statement is 100% correct because in my opinion it can even be sandbox, right?

I have a site that has 3 different articles on it, all 3 have backlinks, and in my SHORT experience I would believe that they have enough to at least make top 30 or 40 for sure. My question though is that I havent backlinked to any of the articles in this site for the past 2 month, but it still dances. An article will be ranked 20th 1 day, and then drop out of the top 100 for a week, just to come back into the top 20 again for 1 day. All 3 articles on this site are doing that. How long will this last? Any way to help with it?

Have been working on a couple of smaller sites more or less for the learning experience. Had both of them ranking on page 1 for a number of keywords, and have been moving ahead with larger more ambitious projects as I seemed to be getting the hang of this.

Then yesterday, out of the blue, every single one of the pages that were ranking on page 1 (on both sites) disappeared out of the top 100 completely. Haven't bothered to see exactly how far down they've gone - past page 10 is as good as gone IMO.

Interestingly, this seems to coincide with G's new "penguin" algo update - so who knows if this is going to be a permanent penalty or if - HOPEFULLY - the dance is going to continue and things will bounce back?

Now I know why this thread is a sticky with a zillion posts in it - sort of hard to focus on doing more hard work when it all seems for naught.

I got google dance 3 weeks ago because I build my site with low quality links. Then, I try to hire a professional seo service which can build backlink consistently until I reach page one. I also write unique content regularly. So, I think building backlink must be done along with writing unique content to make your site more stable.

Google Dance is nothing but a temporary rank for your page while Google is calculating page rankings using their algo (which can often take a long time). It can also happen when your competitors have made some substantial changes to their sites and Google is forced to re-evaluate positions. After the calculations are over, your page gets a fixed position, which is when the dance stops. And whether your page went up the listing or down, depends on how well your SEO was (at least the way Google sees it) besides other factors...

Wait for the dance to settle, see where it takes you. Be careful with backlinking, especially since Penguin. The best type of backlink you can get it to Guest Blog for a relevant site to your niche.

Any type of backlinks that you get, make sure they are relevant to your niche so you dont need to worry about future updates drilling you.

Also avoid spun content unless you have a GREAT spun article, that reads perfectly every time, with an 80%+ spin.

Make sure to vary up your anchor text. As a rule of thumb, I am trying to only have 10% keyword anchor text.

Also make sure to backlink your inner pages more than your root, and dont forget any inners, you must make it look natural.

Look at the google dance in a positive way, its not as bad as people make out, and certainly nothing to fear.
Google is paying an interest in your site, as your building links and doing seo etc. Google looks at your site and gathers information as to how important your site now is, so it will start the dance, and try to work out where it should put your site in the serps,
(Usually its higher than before), once the dance settles. I have had sites go from page 1 bottom, to page 10, 1 hour later page nowhere, next day page 23, then a week later page 1 number 1. It does happen. But remember don't stop building quality backlinks, as you will arouse suspicion with google if yopu just stoip. keep everything natural is the key.
And remember links its quality not quantity. 5 pr 5 links are more effective than 300 low page links.

Google Search (or Google Web Search) is a web search engine owned by Google Inc. Google Search is the most-used search engine on the World Wide Web,

receiving several hundred million queries each day through its various services.

The order of search results on Google's search-results pages is based, in part, on a priority rank called a "PageRank". Google Search provides many options for customized search, using Boolean operators such as: exclusion ("-xx"), alternatives ("xx OR yy"), and wildcard ("x * x").

The Google Dance, that sounds funny. It's not funny when it happens to you, however. Personally I don't worry so much if I know I have good original content , an internal link structure, videos and images. You can get clicks from many other keywords that are in your website. Some of them you wouldn't even think of. If you are getting regular traffic and earning money from your site, it's good. Don't worry. Do your best and let it go. That's the way I do it. good luck, Carole

In my experience there is nothing like google dance because google is changing daily. There is no longer a Google dance per se as serps tend to be updated constantly.

Google dance is fluctuation of the keyword ranking. In effect of this ranking get a huge difference in up/down position. But it for a short term and you will get back to your earlier ranking with in few days.
