You might want to look at "Traffic Travis" (by Mark Ling) they have just released the "free" version 4 There is a wealth of information on keywords and competition available for you to look at. Each tab covers a different aspect. I use the "seo" tab to look at competition for a given keyword. It will tell you the top twenty sites for that word or phrase the number of backlinks to the page and the domain,domain age, plus other info and give you a sense of whether that keyword is worthwhile chasing after or is too stiff for competition. Each tab is accompanied with a short video explanation. I only use the "seo" feature, but it is great as a keyword tool as well if you take the time to learn it. the "paid" version allows you to save your work. I just got 4 so I am not sure if you can save in this version. Good luck.

It will be worth it to learn what these mean. This is a backlink picture of the site you are viewing. it has at least one .edu back link (which is thought to carry more value). It' s linked to by 94 other sites which reside on different servers ( shows diversity of backlinks). Go get seoquake a free search engine tool and study what it tells you about sites that you visit.

Just wondering, did you pull your user name from the song off the album Duke?? If so, interesting choice and that album is still really enjoyable to listen to! If not, never mind and sorry to interrupt the thread. Either way, sorry man!

I did indeed mate. Massive fan. Not really related to anything connected to IM. I use it for most of my forum names. Well spotted!

Alright then! Can't beat Rutherford, Banks and Collins together! All of them masters at their chosen instruments. My mom, of all people, introduced me to Genesis. She would give me albums of music she liked for birthdays, Christmas and such. She even got a few Barry Manilow albums by me that I managed to find something redeemable in! Weekend in New England is one sappy, maudlin and weepy classic that I'll still listen to once in a while when no other guys are within earshot! I have my mother to blame for that!

But anyway, you may also want to give Majestic SEO a look. I like the tool and have subscribed to it. $48 per month. If all you have ever used before was the Yahoo Site Explorer or some other free tool like that, it will be a nice eye opener for you to see exactly what a site has going on in terms of backlinks. I looked into Spyglass (and may still get it) but chose Majestic SEO because it looked easier for me to work with. AHREFS.com is another good site for this type of thing.

And, based on what you gave in terms of numbers in your original post, pretty much anyone, with any sort of drive, wits and commitment, should be able to overtake this person's serp position quite easily.

I have no idea how to read this and thus don't know the minimum amount of a certain PR level backlinks I'd need to compete. Is there a site or tool that will tell me something like "to compete with this site you'd need at least this number of pr6 backlinks and this number must be edu and gov".

You are looking for SEO Spyglass. It is the best tool I have found.

The tool is made specifically for spying on your competition and it gives you all the information you need.
***The FREE version provides you with backlinks found by only 3 search engines...including Alexa. Ice Rocket and Blekko. The PAID version costs $97.00 and I think is worth every penny. It actually tells you what you need to know to make a decision.

Here are some insrtuctions

1. Choose the competitor's URL about which you want information.
2. Put that URL into SEO Spyglass
3. Wait for it to count the number of links your comp has.
4. Tell it to analyze the links/update information.
5. When it is finished order the results by Page PR
6. Re order results by DoFollow or NoFollow
7. Visit the links to see if you can leave a comment and mirror their backlink count.

INSIGHTS GAINED.
I found that when following this strategy to research what types of backlinks the competition had...I realized that they had way more than me and that some or most of their backlinks were one or more of the following:

Legitimate backlinks from HIGH PR sites.
Backlinks on Link Wheels. (ie Fake pages specifically made for backlinks).
Obviously purchased or sponsored HIGH PR PAGE links.
A Few Over Commented HIGH PR Page Comment backlinks.

MY CONCLUSION
I can either spend my whole life looking for backlinks, or I can pay someone to give me high quality, HIGH PR backlinks. I concluded that I wanted to find the best backlink service available. So I started looking through the "Warriors For Hire" section and picked one. I spent $50.00 dollars on my first attempt with Skyyo Media. They delivered as promised and they were really professional and prompt in their communication.

I am waiting to see how well that affects my primary Keyword targets. So far...after completion (3 days) not much. But these kinds of things take time. I checked some of the links they sent in their generated report and the links exist. We will see how well that works.

Overall...it is important to get HIGH PR backlinks. What I have found is that my On Page SEO often blows away my competition, but they have more backlinks. That is the real deal.

Thanks for that. Traffic Travis looks pretty excellent for a newbie. It even tells you an estimation of difficulty in beating the site. Combined with spyglass, I think Its all I'd need. $50 per site on backlinks is a bit out of my reach right now. But I will certainly make a note of the seller you used for future. I'm not opposed to paying for them, but I'd rather hit really easy comp and start doing my own backlinking on blogs and stuff to beat them.

Thanks for this. Just a question, because I'm unclear. You are waiting for the results from the $50,000 you spent with Skyyo Media, or have moved onto to another SEO company, after already having experienced good results with Skyyo Media?

Or something altogether different that I didn't apprehend from reading what you wrote?

Sorry for the fuzziness about that. First off I spent only $50 dollars not 50 thousand. (I wish eh!)

Second to clarify...I am waiting for results with Skyyo Media which usually take 3 - 4 weeks as the backlinks fully drip out as they are indexed by the search engines.

I am already looking for other great deals on Warriors For Hire and I intend to try several different Backlink Services.

In particular I would like to mirror some of my competition whose backlinks I found spread out all over an elaborate "well faked" series of legitimate looking websites. These types of links showed up in the blogroll, in the main navigation, and in actual articles placed within the content of the site. They were also HIGH PR 4, 5, and 6 pages that provided these backlinks.

I am not sure where to find that type of backlink service or how much it will cost. When I explained this to Skyyo Media they said they were considering a way to provide such a system of Backlinks and estimated that the cost would be "expensive". This tells me that Skyyo Media...while they absolutely know what they are doing...and can explain it very easily to me...is not yet at that kind of level yet. Hence I will continue to look for others who can provide that service...while probably exploring another round with Skyyo Media after my first evaluation.

Have you considered just joining a blog network or a few blog networks - something like BMR? Or maybe you have already. I think BMR is only like $60 per month and there are people who will write the 150 words "blog posts" for peanuts.

I don't think the PR of the home pages with these types of networks will be anywhere near as high as 5 or 6 though.

Maybe get started on creating your own sites that feature this!

I use Traffic Travis to give me a guide as to how easy or difficult it will be to get to the first page of Google for any keyword. Once I find a keyword that looks reasonably easy to rank for, then I use both Traffic Travis and SEO Spyglass to find competitor's backlinks. The free versions of both tools are enough.
