IT is not in Googles interest to have 1000 sites with 3-5 pages on them that look exactly the same. If you are talking about bigger sites (50 pages+) of relevant unique content , then it probably will not be a problem. If its for adsense purposes (so they are micro niche sites) than you will get some "heat", but not because of the theme. The theme is just a "tell" that you are doing something strictly for the purposes of serving ads.

I would advise against building gazzillions of sites

    My 2 cents.

    Sincerely, Buyseech

I've had decent results by customizing the theme so it isn't identical, but am making sure there is not exactly identical content too. Here I am talking about a network of about 10 sites, and not hundreds of sites.

Do you know how many people are just using the default template from Wordpress ? Are they getting deindexed because of the template ? Of course NOT.

The most important is to have different content and you should be fine. When I am saying different content I am not only talking about the posts, that includes titles, site title as well.

It's all about manual reviews. Humans can interpret things. A site with the standard wordpress theme is made by a newbie or someone who doesn't care. Someone with clickbump or CTR theme is likely to be a SEO guy. If the site now also has thin content you already have two points on the "This site is made for adsense only" scale. Using themes specifically optimized for adsense won't get you penalized or banned, but it makes the decision for reviewers easier to tell if you are just in it for the moneys.

    You're mixing two different things:

One - Use a normal theme on all your sites.
Other - Use a "supa dupa" optimized theme on all your sites.

The second one can leave a footprint and that can cause you trouble.

If it's not a MAF site, it's no problem at all. It's not forbidden to use the same theme as many others, or to use an adsense optimized theme. Thin content is the problem when some of those sites gets de-indexed, not the theme they were using.

I feel a theme is critical to a websites success.

Design plays an important part in conversions. Never just throw up a crap design. Take the time to give your site some love, and Google (and your traffic) will love you as well.
