I've recently been in a lull-state in regards to SEO and internet marketing all together, but I want come back and try to increase my IM revenue. But when I try to check backlinks I always used SEO Quake but now it seems like it won't show backlinks any more, so what other methods are you guys using to check your backlinks as well as your competitions backlinks? Preferably a free method, but if some paid alternatives are cheap I'm willing to dish out some cash.

Download SEO Spyglass. There's a free version and a paid version. The main limitation of the free version is that it limits the amount of backlinks per project at 1000. But 1000 is still plenty of links for uncovering the amount/PR/types of links that your competitors are using to get the top rankings, so that should do the trick for you.

I use Majestic SEO and you would be able to see the number of backlinks you have. For more features you have to pay a subscription.

      I use Open Site Explorer

It works really well. There's a limit to how many sites you can search per day, but its a good start.

Subscription? I'm not paying a subscription, are you? It's a one-off fee as far as I remember.

I see that Seo Quake added a SEMrush link checker to the toolbar, but it shows nothing for me. Is there anyone who knows how to make it work?

Google analytics is the best way to make observation of site traffic. This tool will make you known that from which site you have get more links and traffic and how much it has be benefited for you.
Or typs Link:yousitename in search box and it will display results with the sites from which you have get the backlinks.
