First page SERP, zero traffic

Good evening all,

Longtime lurker, but first time poster here. I'm very new to SEO, but have followed enough advice to get to the second to last spot on the 1st page of Google SERP. The keywords are "trading psychology" which Adwords says has about 6-7K searches per month. But when I checked my referring URLs on my blogspot, I haven't had one single hit from these keywords. What am I doing wrong? I would surely have expected maybe a few dozen to a few hundred hits by now.

Thanks for any help or guidance you can give and hope you are all had a Merry Christmas!

I have looked at your keyword and first there are a few problems.

Common beginner mistake is to use "broad" match for your keyword rather than "exact match" in the adwords keyword tool.

The difference in short is that "broad", the figure that gives you 6-7k searches, refers to "trading psychology" and the many variations of the word, not just "trading psychology" itself.

So you need to use "Exact" (the option is on the left side of the keyword tool), to find out how many people search for the exact phrase "Trading Psychology".

When I search for the "Exact" search volume of that word, I only get 320. Please note I am only looking at the "Local" number (you should too) as that will give you a better idea. Global is really more a vague search number with local being the more important stat.

So factor the 320 monthly and a #9 ranking, that is why you have no traffic. Even a #1 ranking for this word would yield only approximately 40% of the traffic or roughly 120 hits a month which equates to about 4 hits a day.

I am assuming you are in the United States (as am I), however if you are not the same principles apply.

So in summary, you made a beginner mistake by using "Broad" match instead of "Exact" match.

    Good luck.

Like GuyMan82 says, although your keyword does have over 6k searches per month, these are broad searches, which means, these are not searches for this keyword only but also searches for keywords related to the keyword "trading psychology".

When you are doing keyword research, you should assess the keywords by the number of "exact" searches per month. This is the number of searches for exactly this keyword, not "trading psychology tips", or "best trading psychology", but only the keyword "trading psychology".

Another thing - did you check your keyword on Google while you were logged in to your Gmail account? If you are logged in to Gmail and try to check how a site is ranked, you may often get skewed results. Your Google account will remember the site you've visited and get you personalized results the next time you make a search for the keyword.

The best way to check a site's ranking is by going to Hide My A**, going to Google through their proxies and making the search this way. Or checking the rankings via a tool, e.g. Market Samurai.

May be the wrong keyword choice.

Even if you have chosen wrong keywords, you can raise your chances to get some traffic even from the 9th position. Try to attract people attention with rich snippets from schema.org

Yeah, that's a newbie mistake. I also made that mistake when I was just starting.

Also, the tool is not accurate. I was able to rank a keyword for the number 1 position and it had supposedly 2900 monthly searches. I got very little traffic from it, about 5-10 a day.

    Well said it Gyuman82!

Not only exact match matters, the keywords you picked is extremely important. There are situations where you have a lot of traffic but poor conversion, so what you really looking for is targeted buying keywords.

I have an article about type of keywords here: Research, Problem & Buying Keywords 101

When you finally ranked on page 1 and get some traffic, it is time to learn the skill of finding profitable keywords. Jack Duncan is the master in this area, he has a free ebook here:
