There is a "keyword1 keyword2" search which makes 300,000 monthly searches, and then there is a related phrase "keyword3 keyword4" which makes something like 20,000 searches on Google.
As expected, keyword1keyword2 domains with all major possible extensions are taken, as well as are taken keyword3keyword4 domains.

One idea in this situation would be adding them all together: keyword1keyword2keyword3keyword4.com But, this makes the domain 24 characters long (plus the extension).
Another solution would be keyword1keyword2AB, where A and B reprisent the first letters of the two other keywords, and that way the domain is only 15 characters long.

Which is better for SEO, if my major target is "keyword1 keyword2", adding the two other keywords, or keeping only the major two and just adding two letters which in itself has zero SEO value? Which of the two solutions has the least diminishing effect on the major keyphrase?

I would not put them all together. It looks very spammy and if anyone saw a domain that long they would be very drawn away from it. Adding the 2 letters IMO also is not a good idea, because it will not get you any SEO for keyword 3 and 4. You are much better of searching for things within the 300,000 search area. Thinking about what those people want from those searches and then targeting a sub niche. This way you are super defined in what you offer and your conversion will be higher. Also much less people will compete with you because they are busy slaving away trying to rank 1st for the 300,000 search.

Thats my 2 cents. Hope it helps, Cheers !

The thing is, it is a low CPC niche (CPC 30 cents), and Google search result page tells that they have only 2,280,000 pages with that keyphrase. So, the competition is not that heavy at all (I haven't done SEO spying on the first ten yet). A situation similar to what qrp suggested HERE. I just have to go after that 300,000 search :-)

But yes, probably this long domain name is not a good idea after all and I have to go with the letters.

Even though this is a big arguement in SEO at the moment I would not even bother with an exact match domain. Go for something catchy that's easy to remember. As long as your om-page seo is good and you build quality links you don't need an EMD. The power of an EMD is very minimal and why a lot will argue I actually find it easyier to rank a site when using a general domain.

I wouldn't be buying such a long domain. It might suffer due to keyword stuffing, and it do not look natural. Better to add something at the beginning or at the end.

Keyword stuffing your DN won't get you anywhere! I would concentrate on adding very good content on your subject, also good links from other sites that have good content on your subject.

    Just my thoughts
