Anyone try this? Does it play into improving rankings in Google Places?

I have tested it and I know other people who have tested it using different linking methods. The result: negative.

Google does not think of a Place page as of a normal web page. Number of links to a Place page is not a ranking factor. Number of citations associated with a Place page is a major ranking factor.

I am agree with your experience and explanation i also don't think that it can play any role to improve your ranking, for ranking purpose you should do link building.

You want to have lots of backlinks to your page because this is how the search engines determine the relevance and popularity of your site. If Google sees your sight as very popular for a particular topic, they will rank you higher in the search. And that's exactly what you want them to do.
