VPN (or VPS) vs. Proxies For Magic Submitter?

Basically I was (accidentally) running MS without proxies enabled (even though I have Squid Proxies) without realizing it and got a call from my ISP.

They didn't shut me down BUT I'm very anal now about using MS and making sure that I have the best system in place for disguising its activities.

Does anyone here use Magic Submitter and if so what do you trust/use?

What's the difference between a VPN and VPS, also? What are the price points, pros/cons, and who are the best players in town for each?

REALLY appreciate the help here, I figured I could just start using MS again but ensuring that it's using proxies but I wanted to make sure I had the best solution to ensure that my ISP or nobody can trace activity back to my IP.

Thanks!

A VPN and VPS are two completely different things.

Virtual Private Network in really simple terms is similar to using a proxy. It encodes your entire connection. Two advantages, and why I use a VPN over proxies, is they are far cheaper and most VPN's allow you to automatically rotate your IP address. I like HideMyAss (in my signature), but there are others out there that are pretty good, like StrongVPN.

A VPS is a Virtual Private Server. Think of it like an extra computer located somewhere else. You can connect to it remotely through your home computer (if you are using Windows, Remote Desktop Connection works fine) and use it just like you would your home computer. Couple advantages... First, it has its own internet connection. Whatever you do through your VPS, is not going to be noticed at all by your ISP. Second, you can leave it on running 24/7 without hogging up your home computer or having to leave your home computer on all the time. That is great for something like MS and its scheduler.

My favorite VPS provider is currently out of stock. Not sure when they will have more in.

I have two VPS's right now. On one of them MS, BMD, and AMR are running pretty much all the time. I also have my VPN running on there rotating the proxy every 45 minutes.

The other one I use almost solely for Scrapebox. Scrapebox is the one tool I would recommend proxies versus a VPN. A VPN does not rotate the IP address fast enough to be of use to Scrapebox.

      Hope that helps.

Mike, I run my servers at home on a Comcast residential broadband modem, and I have a great bookmarking tool that does not yet have proxy support. I got banned from a key target site and am interested in your VPN comments.

I use a blend of 40 or 50 proxies, and pay $30 or so per month for them. Great service but would a VPN replace my proxies AND get me past my banned IP issue? I've begged Comcast to change it, and tried SMAC (killer app) but my IP is still the same and I cannot use that no-proxy app to post backlinks on my primary target site.

As far as HMA, for MS do you just switch to another IP once you switch to another profile?

Everything I do is on the scheduler. I just have it switching the IP every hour. If I was creating a bunch of profiles back to back, then yes, I would switch in between.

Okay cool, because I don't know much about HMA all I know is with this program I disconnect the IP and just pick a different country and connect again. Hopefully that's ALL I need to do.

        Hi MikeFriedman,

Hopefully you can help me out, I have MS on a Windows Virtual Dedicated Server and I am trying to run HideMyAss (VPN) and it is shutting down my Remote Desktop Connection and will not work.

Have you used HMA on a Virtual Dedicated Server, if so how do I configure my server to get it to run successfully please?

If not, which VPN do you use with MS on your Virtual Dedicated Server or VPS please?

I need to be able to rotate IP addresses using MS from my server, so any advice you can give would be great.

        Thanks,
        Kyle

Yeah that's normal. You are connecting to the IP address and HMA is changing the IP address.

Use LogMeIn Hamachi. Install it on your computer and on your VPN.

Have it create a separate network. Use that IP address to connect.

          It's pretty simple.

    VPS + Proxies.

the VPS gives you the benefit of freeing up your own PC, and in some cases more importantly, your bandwidth. The costs are usually minimal. (About $20 or less a month if you look around.) I use http://www.websiteserviceplus.com.

Decent semi-dedicated proxies will run you about $10 for 5-10. My preference is Buy proxies for scrapebox, xrumer, twitter| where to buy proxies

    Some other cheap VPS recommendations:

    1. xsserver.com - fast support, but you have to make a ticket every time a server crashes (no remote reboot).

    2. hostamus.com - run by a great dude, good prices if you search for promo offers. Also got to make a support ticket for reboots (no remote reboot), but they are working on a full control panel at the moment.

Second that (personally) as it'll be cheaper overall.

However, both will be pretty fine to use with MS.

Recently switched over to Bermanhosting.com after Websiteserviceplus raised their rates and moved away from reselling ThrustVPS. (Which started to give me issues towards the end anyway.) It's a shame because Websiteservice plus was fantastic. I'm sure the service is better now since moving away from Thrust.

That said, Bermanhosting has been a LOT faster and more stable in the 2 months I've been using them.

The one for $6.95 is useless. 128 MB of RAM. LOL.

After that, their prices are crap. 1 GB of RAM for $49.95/month and 2000 GB of bandwidth. That is terrible. You could get the same thing with unlimited bandwidth for less than half that price.

So would Ultimate Demon work well wih HMA VPN or would proxies be more appropriate.

What's the pros and cons of running a server at home with vpn|proxies vs getting a VPS? I don't pay utilities.

      Hi Mate

Noticed that your question was unanswered and thought I would clarify it for you. To answer your first question, Yes Ultimate Demon will work using a HMA VPN.

Your second question seems to indicate that you aren't quite sure what a VPN and VPS are so let me clarify.

A VPN is a Virtual Private Network, which basically means that your internet connection us being tunneled through a different network therefore presenting a different public IP (the IP address which is visible by the public when surfing the net) you will be showing the Public IP of the gateway which your VPN uses to connect to the internet. Which I am assuming has a dynamic IP address or they themselves use rolling proxies.

So to sum up the VPN is a way of hiding your public IP address and will work with pretty much any software, just be aware some ISPs do not support VPN tunneling from a domestic / residential connection, Most do but some do not.

A VPS on the other hand is a Virtual Private Server this is basically a remote server that is accessed through either a user interface (like cPanel) or through a remote desktop utility. Where you can run software 24/7 just like a PC you have turned on at home. This by design needs to have a static IP address otherwise you have no way to locate it if it loses connection and has another IP dynamically assigned. Its the equivalent of moving home and not forwarding your mail.

Anyway, due to it having a static IP address you will still need to either use proxies or a VPN tunnel like HMA otherwise the lone IP will get banned just like the one associated with your domestic connection.

Hope this makes sense, if not please feel free to PM me and I will explain further.

      Steve

Yeah, HMA would work just fine with UD. HMA is a cheaper solution than private proxies, so I recommend it over proxies for everything but Scrapebox. It does not change IPs fast enough for use with Scrapebox.

What was the call from your ISP with regard to?

Spam complaints, or using too much bandwith?

I think a VPS is a better option. You can run MS on both your home computer and your VPS at the same time if you so desire.
