No it's not the only way, but it's usually the type of traffic that converts best (clicks) as it's people looking for something.

Returning visitors, social media visits, traffic from newsletters, etc click on ads much less when they get to your page.

Hmmmm. I think SEO is the opposite way to get visitors
for an adsense site.

SEO is a crapshoot. Like a box of chocolates. You never
know what you're going to get. Adsense needs targeted
visitors, not casual surfers.

I like being active in forums in the niche, squidoo, my
own blogs, facebook, twitter, not necessarily in that
order.

SEO is the least of my concerns for adsense sites. Why?
Because I tweak my adsense sites for targeted ads, not
SERPs. Different ballgame.

Now it's true, that in getting my own traffic, linkbait is
huge. Authority grows, google love happens. It's
actually the way google says to do it, believe it or not.

I'd say working on targeted traffic and ads will have "SEO"
as a by-product.

If it's an MFA site, then yes SERPs are pretty much it. If it's a site built for people then you have plenty of other options & should be targeting alternative traffic sources like niche forums, & other social sites.

One of my hobby sites gets at least 2k traffic from a niche forum every day, has been getting the same steady traffic flow for years, because I offer free content that the forum traffic wants.

Quality free content is one of the easiest ways to get free repeat targeted traffic to your pages.

Programming is your hobby? I read somewhere else that you have sites with 1000's of downloads, I can't think of anything else then programming really, besides the travel/bike/hike/craft maps

yeah mp3 or video but I put you on a higher ladder then that. Also there is pretty much a limitation to ammount of ebooks one can give away and sell in the very same niche.

I definitely agree with social media BUT, I don't think people are going to want to pay for the traffic that is in turn paying them. When you own an Adsense site, you get paid from people that pay for PPC Traffic. You would be losing money or earning pennies if you paid for traffic for an Adsense site.

No. SEO is not the only way to promote the site but still i believe that it plays the major role in increasing the rankings and traffic. If i say in a broader way SEO is the part of SEM and SEM is the all and all to cater the traffic and to promote the site.

You should use SEO, SMO, SEM like ways. As SEO is part of SEM and SMO is part of SEO.
And if you want instant traffic then PPC can be best for your site but it is inorganic way to get results. So the best ways are SEO and social media. And now a time social media more using blog, articles, and video methods after the panda update.

seo is for traffic and it is fact more the traffic is more you get from adsense so traffic is the main thing. seo brings a lot of traffic and social media too but in fact seo is more important than linking here and there

SEO is not the only way to go for an adsense site. In this case it will depend on your niche, if it's large the better.

You can then look at branding your site, blogging is a good way to achieve this as well as offline ads targeted in the right media.

Think of press release, forums, social networking and others.

If you consider content marketing to be something that SEO's do, then yes, it is the only way. Because link bait and all that other fancy crap you all like to talk about is just content marketing, which is part of any good SEO's arsenal/skill set.

I would like to add something more about the SEO, as we all are aware about the seo power, why it is done? when it is done? Why to do it? All Off Page Activities come into SEO package. Blogging, commenting, participating forums, review submissions.

But you can also use SMO Activities for getting traffic to your website. So, every online advertising techniques are important to promote any services, products, information.

Don't depend on single factor, try to use everything which could help you in your online presence.
