Choosing the right domain

Looking for some help regarding choosing a domain name with SEO in mind. Lets say that my main keyphrase is "red hats". Ideally I would get www.redhats.co.uk, but of course it is already taken. What would be the effect of adding another word to my domain, for example www.redhatsunlimited.co.uk? Would Google still pick up on the "red hats" and rank me based on this, or would i lose all the benefit of having my keyphrase in the domain?

You should understand why exact match domains matter in the first place.

Most of the time when real people link to you they will simply say hey, go check out hxxp://yoursite.com

When you have the keyword in the domain Google treats it like it's anchor text (your keyword) I don't if it's the same weight, but Google admits this is true.

That's the real reason why an exact match domain is powerful.

Knowing that, you should realize that putting another word in there is fine.

Exact match domains aren't the be all end all, if they're available take em. If not, just ad an HQ or Academy, or whatever at the end and move on.
