"Move" Wordpress Site - With Plugins, all at Once?

Hi warriors!

I use Hostgator and was starting to move a blog I have from one account
to another. I need to get familiar with "manually" doing a transfer...(I do
not want HG to do it for me - I need to learn the "hard way"

I do not want to use any "cloning sw" at this time
- I need to do it
manually. I need to become familiar with the process from the "ground up"

Is there anyway to download everything from my hostgator hosting account, to my desktop - including plugins?

I realize it can be done, Why? Because not long ago I pruchased a blog
that included everything in a zip file, including the plugins; But, I do not
know how to do it myself. I tried to find a youtube vid detailing the
process, but they didn't seem to address combining "plugins" with the
"theme/blog" as one file...

  1. Maybe I download the plugins separately?
  2. then combine them with the site files (I had downloaded) on my desktop?
  3. then re-zipp?

I purchased a "blog in a box" and it was very easy to unzip it all in the
(cpanel) file manager. I wish I could "bundle" up my own site in the same way...

(I know the Sql DB is added separately)

Thank you very much in advance for any help at all

Danni~

Here are some step by step instruction:

    1. Login to your Hostgator CPanel and go to your file manager
    2. Go to your public_html and select the website that you want to transfer
    3. Highlight all the files of your website
    4. Click "Compress" at the upper right
    5. Download the compressed file
    6. Go to phpMyAdmin and download your SQL database
    7. Login your new Hostgator account and go to the CPanel
    8. Upload the compressed file
    9. Go to phpMyAdmin and upload your SQL database
    10. You're done!

    Hope this work

I wrote an article explaining how to move WordPress a new server just the other day on my blog, using Hostgator and cpanel too. (Easier than you think).

      Thanks Peter,

Very nice detail and screenshots by Suzanne. Excellent thread. I didn't know it existed...

      Peter - After going through the process would it be fair to summarize the critical points as such;

Database creation; in a sense, it doesn't matter too much what name I create on the install end of where the site is hosted or what name I give to it before I export it from my host - because it seems to boil down to making sure I have "parity' for these three things:

      1. DB name
      2. BD user
      3. BD password
By syncing up those three things, ultimately the DB should be good to go. Using the wp-config file to verify the parity, or use as the source of change to the three things I mentioned above (db name, user, password) ?

And secondly - within phpmyadmin, making sure that within "Wp-options" the "siteurl" and "home" show the new url are necessary

Would you say those are the main "breaking points?" or am I missing something?

      thanks peter

      thank you very much mary,

Because my intent is ultimately to build and sell sites I feel I need
to learn the process from the ground up - then once I understand
what's what then I can use something like you've mentioned.

I actually read a little about and saw some people had some issues. Perhaps
not all, but it verified my need to learn the nuts and bolts of the process

      thanks again!

BUT if I may ask Mary (opportunity how has it worked for you?
(because at some point I will strongly consider its use)
