When I am linkbuilding, do I need to build links for each page or do I just build it for my main page.

I would say both. But I think your main page is the most important thing to get ranked well on Google, then your inner pages will follow. But some of the IMers are focusing on ranking their inner pages (mostly product reviews) than the main page itself.

If you have a specific webpage for the keyword you're targeting, then you should optimize it for that particular page. Its because targeting index page increases the bounce rate and you can't ensure conversions.

The homepage usually has the most important keywords. So, the first step is to build links for those keywords. Then, build links for the inner pages for the targeted keywords on each page.

A good practice would be to structure your website so that a certain number of inner pages are supporting your high traffic keywords, such as your main page.

Then build your links to the inner pages, that have been created for keywords that are much easier to rank for. They may have less volume alone, but together with all the inner pages you can get more traffic than by just ranking the front page. The link juice will also pass to your home page because you will have linked contextually to the homepage from these inner pages.

Once you have a large number of these inner pages ranking, then go after your front page. What you will see is multiple listings for that keyword on the front page of Google. If you play your cards right, you could take up spots 1 - 3 with the proper link structuring of your website.

      This is called siloing.

You need to build links for such page which hold the unique content and which you think that can be helpful for people and they like it and this way you can get more results. So not get the backlinks only for the root domain or for all domain but get backlinks for such which be liked by people.

Well it really depends on the keyword you are targeting. Be sure to build backlinks on the page you want to rank on the search engines.

    dchen88...
first how many pages do you currently have and what kind of site is it?

if it is a niche site and it is new, it goes as follows (nothing is in stone)

    1. you will have your first "page" (main page, sticky page) as your main keyword. Your very first step is to get it ranked. Remember pages get ranked not websites. That means all efforts are on making that page the most relevant on the internet. All initial links on and off page point to that one page!

    2. Your first 3 to 5 "post" (not pages) are to be about you first "page". That means you will place at least one anchor text link from each post to that main home page.

    3. When that home "page" gets ranked in the top 15 or so, you can consider adding your next keyword enriched "page" with corresponding "post" like mentioned for the home page. Remember what ever "page" you are trying to rank for gets the links from on page or off.

  • Ideally you want to build for the inner pages, but to be honest I am really lazy at this. I find that often I can still rank quite well for inner pages, just by link building to my main page.

i think you should rank and push most links to your main page and once you have a steady amount of traffic to your site and have some top rankings then you should target inner pages. but off the bat i do not think it is necessary Google will pull pages for keywords anyways.
