Is this ranking penalty manual or automatic?

I have this site that was ranking pretty good a while ago with several different keywords and pages (1 KW per page).

The last thing I did was ordering an AMR blast from Fiverr to ONE of the pages.

A little while later the complete site was penalized. All the keywords dropped 50 ranks or more.

I assumed this was due to a manual review because ALL keywords were affected so I ignored the site for a while because I didn't think I could do anything to make it go away.

And today it came to my mind that the penalty might be automatic and not manual. My link building was very one sided and almost all links have the KW as anchor. I know now that this is bad but can it get a WHOLE site penalized? I assume the AMR blast was the last straw, but it went only to ONE single page and not to all of them!

The question is, do you think that when I now start adding links with different anchors that the sitewide penalty might be lifted automatically or is a sitewide -50 a manual penalty?

Take a look and your anchors and if your site/brand name isn't the no 1 & 2 then I'd work on getting it that way. It can be done with the low quality links but I'd also hunt down blogs/sites in your niche that don't normally sell links, and then try and buy your way in(Offer a great widget, pay to be on their links/resources page, pay to be interviewed, pay/offer to guest blog, have an infrographic created for their site etc).

Forget about anchor text for a bit, add some awesome content , add uniques site features. If it's a site you care about, put some effort into it..if not on to the next!

I agree with linkbuildr. You will always help your site by adding quality, unique content. Try for adding a new article every 2 or 3 days for a month and see what happens.
