I could literally write a book about that, so it's way too much to sum up in a short thread.

Basically look for a keyword that has decent volume and has a decent adwords cost per click. This means it has commercial intent.
Then you need to check out the competition for that keyword, and see how well optimized they are for it.

That's the short story anyway

  Everyone has got different opinion on how to do keyword research, there is also lot of products out there with different methods...
  Start off with google keyword tool (make sure you look at the exact match) which is free, if you have some money to invest then market samurai (there is free trial) is great.
  My current favourite is stealth keyword competition analyzer, its a little slow but found some real gems for me

  to start off you can do some research on keyword research tools... there are many good ones to choose from with varying price points... from there you can at least start working with the data in an organized way...

You need to learn about keyword research.

The holy grail is to find a keyword that has the following 3 elements:

1. Good number of searches.
2. Low competition
3. Keyword with good commercial intent
