Keyword SERP Question

So, I have a couple of questions and would appreciate some skilled answers 
3 days ago, i found a keyword that interested me. These are the details gathered from Adwords KW Tool:
-3,500 exact searches
-5,300 phrase searches
-12,000 broad searches
3 days ago, I searched the phrase on Google WITHOUT quotes, and it showed me 140,000 results, which i found darn good. It shows me about 70,000 results WITH quotes (which sounds fairly decent).
Here's my confusion:
Today, suddenly the SERP count (without quotes) jumped from 140,000 all the way to 830,000. WTF??? Should I even be counting OR concerned about this number without quotes? is it TOO TOO relevant?
Basically, have my chances to rank on page 1 gotten any tougher due to that change alone?
