Hi all,

newbie research is ongoing, but just wanted to pick brains on what people would recommend as the best host? bear in mind my budget is small, so a sort of ground level entry one (although not free, as I'm not a fan of those pop up ads).
I thought Hostgator looked ok, as they allow you to add up to 25 domains, and 1&1 Internet seem pretty good.
Any horror stories, positives about these 2? recommendations for others?

Yeah Hostgator is good and widely used. Also as you stated you can just add domains as you go without any costs (apart from the domain cost).

I would also keep your domain registrar seperate just in case something happens at Hostgator (or any host) that you want to or need to move the domain. Also if you decide in the future to move things it is a lot easier.

The best host I've used by far is Arvixe

I'm a web developer and I like that for such a low price they give you so many options. Like having a CPanel admin rather than clumsy admin panels that other cheaper hosts give you. Plans start from only 4.99 a month and for an extra $2.00 a month you can get a dedicated IP address which you can change at any time. This is really powerful if you're sending out a lot of emails and you want to make sure you're not ending up in the junk folders.

Plus they give you unlimited webspace / bandwidth even on the lowest plans.

One company I would truly stay away from is GoDaddy, I didn't like Host Gator much either.

If you are a beginner, why not start making money on a free blog or something? That way you can save up for the ongoing expenses of hosting and whatever else you need to do it properly. Start out small and scale with your business.

I use bluehost as my host, it's extremely affordable month to month (5-6 bucks). I also tend to buy my domains there, but I know many people get cheap domains at places like godaddy or elsewhere and then just transfer them over.

I do not recommend 1&1. HostGator is reliable and well worth the price. But if your budget isn't high enough for HostGator and you want to spend a few bucks less per month also consider BlueHost or WebHostingHub. Best of luck with your new projects!

Go for Hostgator. It's cheap and reliable. Another thing that would give you a + is that since you're new, they have 24 hour support. You can call them or chat with them. Any problem or question, they'll help you out. They helped me out big time when I started out.

Thanks all, great advice and help. Hostgator or Bluehost it is, I'll read their blurbs and make a choice.

Both good choices. Hostgator have a monthly billing option, Bluehost is yearly only.

Another vote for Hostgator, plus for a newbie the support is excellent, you can get your 1st month for 1 cent as well
