Ranked on Page 1 But No Traffic

I'm scratching my head after getting to page one for two keywords

1) one has 3600 exact searches a month on the google keywords tool so from what i read online ranked #10 if it only gets 2% clickthrough i should still see on average 2 visitors a day. i've been #10 for 3 days but still no visitors

2) the second keyword has 12,100 exact searches monthly, 8100 of these are from Hong Kong. i checked google.com.hk and i rank #3 for this keyword but i've only been averaging 5 unique visits a day only...

does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on if i'm doing something wrong? is the google adwords traffic data wrong is there a second tool i can use to crosscheck it? thanks in advance!

Do you have analytics on your website? That would be the best way.

Those stats you see about how much traffic to expect for certain ranking positions are generally BS.

Your expectations are probably the only problem.

Just being number 3 for a search term doesn't guarantee you any traffic.

Sure it increases your chances of getting some, but which term is being searched, what the expectations and desires for that search are, and what your link and description data are showing make all the difference in the actual traffic levels.

For example I could rank generalcrap.com general crap for the search term 'new nike trainers', but if Nike.com are number 2 - they'll probably still get more of the traffic - because they are the brand that dominates for that phrase and probably the exact company that the searcher was seeking. Just because I could outrank them doesn't mean I'll get their traffic.

I might sound like a broken record saying this, and many people will ignore it anyway, but - it's always best to do some quick PPC for the terms you're intending to do SEO for, so that you KNOW what traffic to expect and can test your description for best conversion rates BEFORE you waste months trying to stick at the top of the serps only to find you don't get great traffic or customers for your efforts.

Andy, just about covered everything I would say. The PPC method Andy refers to is typically the most solid way I have heard of for really finding out how much traffic you will get for a keyword.

Keep in mind as well that you could rank number 1 and the person in number 2 position might be getting more clicks than you because his title is more enticing and speaks to the visitor more (as well as what Andy said in his Nike example).

I'm #10 on the first page of a specific niche. Getting on the first page means nothing. I really am a firm believer that you have to get in the top three to get some good traffic - that is if people are searching for that term in the first place.

Well, it doesn't really surprise me at all that you're not seeing any noticeable traffic for being ranked number 10 for a 3600 per month keyword. I don't know what tool you use to check your rankings, but especially with personalized rankings becoming more and more common, you could be #10 in your SERPs and #15 to just about everyone else.

But besides that, assuming that you are getting accurate ranking data, there could still be a number of problems that are causing you not to receive any traffic:

#1. Are there a bunch of sponsored ads or Google properties in the SERPs?
#2. Does your title/description tag differentiate you from the rest of the results so that visitors are inclined to click on your website?
#3. Does the keyword that you're trying to rank for even convert into sales? (See Andyhenry's post above...That's some seriously great advice)

Assuming that you have already taken into consideration #2 and #3 (not much you can do about #1), then chances are you're just going to have to rank higher to start seeing the type of traffic that you're looking for. Although, honestly, I would take Andy's advice before putting anymore work into ranking without knowing whether it'll even make you money to rank for that KW.

There is no universal percentage based on position. the tests that have been done are averages. You could even be ranked 7 for some searches and get no traffic. First page placement is dog food for many keywords (in fact most). You need SEO that gets you to top three or four NOT just first page.

Try changing your site title. Make it catchy so it can capture searcher's eyes. It works sometimes. Ranking on page 1 doesn't mean you'll get tons of traffic, Google doesn't even give accurate data so don't expect too much unless you get #1 spot.

Make sure you arn't getting personalized results which can vastly skew your numbers. Try something like Serpfox, I think you get 10 keywords for free.

You can't expect the exact search volume that Google keywords tool show you. Because many a times people do search keywords to check their websites' rankings. So, in that case those are counted as searches by keyword tool but in exact no traffic volume from that
