Do-follow links are better.. I'm curious, who told you this? Or where did you hear it?

Also, not 100% sure what you mean by "linking to affiliates"

I assume you mean when you link to an affiliate product that you're promoting, right?

I read it here Linking To Affiliates? Better Nofollow Those Links or Google Will Penalize You actually one of my marketing team member suggested it and when I asked where he got that idea/info/miss-info LOL he gave me the link.

#1) The blog post is from 2009
#2) It talked about some paid links... and such so I am a bit confused at this point.

When you have an affiliate link on your site, then put it as "no-follow".

    Why?

I've never marked any of my affiliate links as no-follow on my sites, and they convert just fine..

I honestly dont understand what that is supposed to accomplish.

If you put your link on your website, then use "no follow" to make low OBL (outbond link). Big G loves low OBL.

from Eric Enge interviews Matt Cutts

Eric Enge: If googlebot sees an affiliate link out there, does it treat that link as an endorsement or an ad?

Matt Cutts: Typically, we want to handle those sorts of links appropriately. A lot of the time, that means that the link is essentially driving people for money, so we usually would not count those as an endorsement.

    ....

Eric Enge: If people do have ads on your site, it's still google's wish that people nofollow those links, correct?

Matt Cutts: Yes, absolutely. Our philosophy has not changed, and I don't expect it to change. If you are buying an ad, that's great for users, but we don't want advertisements to affect search engine rankings.

  • I use them on my sites. I don't know how much of a difference it makes, but it certainly doesn't hurt my sites, so I do it anyway.

The reason you use nofollow on any links to ads is because each outgoing link (that does not have the NoFollow tag) decreases your page rank a little bit. Since every page should be linking back to your home page, that page will be free linkjuice for your home. Each page has a finite amount of linkjuice to give out, so if you don't give it to random other sites you'll have more power to help your own site.
