There isn't a much difference..

White hat just means building proper backlinks without using any illegal or mass software..

Black hat just means using a mass commenter or any software to get the backlinks..

That is the difference i only know..there maybe more..

I am not agree with you dude.
There is huge difference b/w both.
Black hat is a method that S.E do not accept and any site using black hat techniques could be caught by S.Es any time and penalized.

White hat is an ethical seo technique which helps you to get higher S.E rankings

White hat are the ethical and legal way to optimize website on search engine, on the other hand black hat SEO uses illegal and prohibited way to get the site optimize on web. like hidden content, dowry pages, duplicate content etc..

Black hat seo is 100% illegal way and white hat seo is 100% legal way. Search engine like white hat seo methods and hate black hat seo methods. doing seo with following all rules and regulation of seo is called white hat seo and doing seo act without following rules of seo is called black hat.

White hat is all that is allowed by the search engines. Black hat is all the sneaky strategies to trick the search engines. Blackhat will not survive for long term, as search engines update their softwares often and will penalize you.

True white hat is getting purely legitimate links and not automating, things like social bookmarks, web 2.0s, guest blog posts.

Grey hat is when you automate these tasks, I don't see a problem with automating but it can be seen as gaining an unfair advantage.

Then there is black hat which is just spamming the sh- out of everything. Mass blog comment blasts, mass spun article submissions etc. Things that just pollute the internet.

There is no law saying that you cannot stuff your website with keywords, cloak content or buy backlinks--all in Google's eyes black hat. The only part of SEO which really is illegal is hacking sites for placing secret backlinks. As far I've visited black hat forums, they don't discuss such activities there. So, both are perfectly legal. As of today, Google is not given any legislative powers yet.

There really isn't much substantive difference and no clear distinction between the two. Both have the same goal--beat the competitors and have a good rating on SERPs. Google dislikes every SEO effort, they would like everything happen naturally, without webmasters thinking about search engines at all. With white hat you usually can make an innocent face and pretend that everything did happen naturally, while with black hat it's clear and simple: content cloaking or keyword stuffing don't happen by itself. And, it's much more likely to get punished (site removed from the index, being sandboxed etc.)

It could be said anything you do specifically for "gaining backlinks" could be considered black hat, even putting your content on web 2.0 sites, etc - depending upon who you ask.

In a perfect world, we'd all create great content, videos, infographics and people would snatch them up and host on their well known sites and we get plenty of "merit based" inbound links. Sadly , it rarely happens like this.

Black hat is illegal? Is the internet police going to show up at your house and put you in jail? Exactly who is this internet police that decide what is illegal and what not? What is their jurisdiction? Is this some secret international task force funded by every country that is connected to the internet?

Violating google's terms and conditions? Google chooses to spider your website (aka scrape and steal your content for their own use), you are not forcing them to visit you. You can only violate a website terms and conditions when you use that site. You might be violating the terms of the sites you use for your spammy backlinks.

The correct terminology, in my opinion, is to say that you are not following google's webmaster guidelines. But that is neither illegal nor violating anybody's terms and conditions. That is something anybody can do of their own free choice.

White Hat SEO means it is the legal activity whatever you do in off page SEO that is accepted by Google and all other search engines.

While black hat SEO means it is spamming work that is considered as illegal activity in SEO which is not acceptable by Google or any other search engine.

White Hat SEO is the ethical practice and Black Hat is the unethical SEO. Examples of Black Hat are hidden content, keyword stuffing, doorway pages, cloaking, and link farming among others. White hat SEO are quality content and effective use of keywords.

Actually the main difference is the legality of them. One is legal and other is illegal. White hat is legal and on the other hand black hat is illegal.
White hat covers all the solid and perfect systems of SEO and black hat covers the tricks and duplicate ways as well as the use of some automated software to take the rank of search engine. Again there are some other SEO process. You can take a look at those here -

I saw a bunch of replies and the first ones butchered it. So i thought i would tell you the real definition:

White: Doing no "link building". Focusing on content development.

Grey hat: Everything in between.

Black hat: Mass spamming, hacking domains for links etc.

What is effective? Elements of both. Depending on your risk tolerance.
