Advise on SEO for Retail Website

Firstly hello to everyone on the Warrior Forum, been reading a lot on this site over the last month since discovering it. The information so far has been great. I am looking for some general advice really in regards to SEO about our site and how we can improve our rankings particulary in search engines.

I guess giving some background information is a good start. I myself do quite a fair amount of web programming and just over two years ago got involved in at the time a small online retail company. I have completely redesigned the ecommerce site over this time and is now finished all up and running; over the 2 year period we have grown from about 50 visits a day to just under 1200-1300 average.

Now, at this moment in time we have done almost nothing in terms of SEO, the website is SEO optimised (a bit through myself but mainly through the cart it is running) so no problems there. Furthermore we have things like facebook/twitter buttons on product pages which do get used a little and our own YouTube channel in which we release product reviews (Have around 100 subscribers and 240k visits).

Basically, a new product we have started selling we discovered we were ranked about 60th in Google, hence the reason why I looked into SEO and found this site! Basically all I have done thus far is write two articles, manually submit these (spun versions) targetting the keywords to about 15 blogs/sites (web 2.0); and a few social media links to the product page.

This has moved us up from 60th to 13-14th for the keyword I targetted; however I would ideally like to be in the top 5. I was just looking for general directions on what I should focus on/read up and implement as Internet Marketing has really grown on me. Furthermore I would also like to increase hits to our recently released product video that is on about 8,000 views; so any ideas there would be great.

Even if you can just link me to a page or something that would be fantastic; I have done a bit of looking around but found so much advice on this and that, that it is is hard to know where to begin!

    For a start make sure your on page seo is good. You can download something like traffic travis free version and it will help you evaluate your page.

    So you would need H tags, your keywords used in first and last paragraph and a few times on the page. A variation of the keywords works as well.

    Also go through the "Sticky" posts at the top of this sub-section. Many will be very relevant to you.

    My only other advice is to take everything that everyone says with a pinch of salt. At the end of the day, only Google know exactly which factors contribute towards ranking a site. Whenever someone says "This helped me to rank" or "This method doesn't have any benefit" you should read it as "I believe this helped me to rank" or "I believe this method doesn't have any benefit"

    Best of luck - it sounds like your keyword isn't terribly competitive (or that your site content and onpage SEO is excellent) - so it shouldn't take you too much work to bump up to first page.

    Thank you kindly for your suggestions so far. I will have a go downloading that program and just check everything is good in terms of on page SEO but I believe it to be.

    I have actually been using that post Will and got as far as doing the articles; but then got to the part where you're having to pay x amount for software etc and unfortunately wasn't sure if it was worth it or not. Will take another look.

    The keywords aren't terribly competitive but are very valuable to us as a company.

    Hello guys,

    Just a quick question. On running traffic travis there seems to be an issue in regards to h1 tags. There is one of these placed around our logo by magento, but also around the name of our product on product pages.

    How should these be changed to maximize the product pages SEO potential while not losing anything from the homepage/non-product pages?

      Having the H1 as your logo won't do any good, unless that is the keyword in words, not as a jpg, gif, etc. Remove the H1 tag there.

      Usually you can use your keyword in a phrase/sentence, at the beginning of the page, with the keyword at the beginning. Then you make that phrase an H1.

      Off the top of my head - So if your keyword was Victorian Furniture what is within the H1 brackets might look like

      <H1>Victorian Furniture For Your Whole Home (end H1 coding here)

      Remember that each page needs seo'd for it's individual keywords, as each page is ranked. So I don't see how you would lose anything from other pages.
