Category pages ranking?

Is this a bad idea?
I set up about 5 categories where they are silo landing pages, in effect
The url which the main silo pages are on (this should be for Adsense ) is
www.mysite.com/category/keyword/
Lets say the category is
Classic Mustangs
So the url would be for example
www.carsite.com/category/classic-mustangs/
Does this look strange to google?
The five main categories are very very low competition I added a lot of backlinks
none of these pages are showing up for the main kws. Google shows them if I enter the url into google it shows the page, so obviously it has it in its index , but nowhere in the top 100 and the competition is VERY low for these kws based on backlinks
What am I doing wrong here?
